An American friend told me the other day that apparently it's not a standard thing over there to kiss eachother on the cheek as a standard greeting (men to women or women to women)

Perfectly normal over here, including your friends' girlfriends and all. Personally I don't initiate but it can be pretty awkward if you're not expecting it.
Maybe it's just a European thing in general. At the very least I know it's normal in the Netherlands and Italy in my experience.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's how it's 'supposed to go' but yeah most of the time you just rub cheeks and kiss the air.
