Finally finished Mission: Impossible 1 and how deceiving it is. Never been a fan of Tom Cruise and Emmanuelle Béart, glad to see Ving Rhames and Jean Reno but that's pretty all.
The end is rushed. It doesn't even respect the TV show, too much ridiculous action with too much CGI. Jean Reno could had a better career because I find him solid as long as he plays villains.
Don't remember well his role but was cool to see him in Ronin too. It's rarely a good thing to see french actresses in american movies they're always chosen only for their appearance.
I now understand why De Palma didn't want to make the 2nd Mission: Impossible. Tom Cruise succeed to make him direct the first one, which shows he has interest not only in playing movies but also in watching them, but this kind of movies have nothing to do with a director like him. Not to put him on a piedestal or whatever, but some directors are more skilled about making mainstream movies, and others not. The action in 1 is ridiculous. Can't compare to the 2nd as I don't remember well (don't know if I even watched it entirely), but to compare to John Woo's movies when he was in Asia, it can't handle the comparison. In asian movies action is shown, special effects, at least at this period, weren't about CGI but about pyrotechnics, making the result credible.
But the helicopter scene in 1 is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen in a movie All these weird scenes defy the law of gravity, so how could we forget we're watching a movie ?
A movie got to be coherent, then we could accept this or that...
I have a lot of Tom Cruise's movies to watch as some of them are "classics" but I don't know why, this actor and Tom Hanks are not my cup of tea...
At least it's cool I'm not blinded by my De Palma admiration
That one was good
