originated in Shreveport... Ratchet = bussdown, bop, etc..etc...basically.. but like IKnowRap said "it progressed into being a term that just means acting crazy or wild, or just a replacement for off the chain"

Yea these lil ones running around saying it to describe anything out of order... My lady teaches high school, she teased them about it so much that she's saying every now and then.

Ex) that girl is rachet. meanin like grimy/dirty etc

I heard it on gangland when they was doing it on some louisana gang.

Threads like this remind me of just how different I am than the majority of you NY/LA/Foreign guys. It's so many words and phrases we use locally that I use fluidly round these parts. I imagine a lot gets lost in translation..

#letsgetratchettttletsgetratchet!

only reason I know about it because I go to school with southern people... ratchet means crazy

STL ratchet: loose, dirty, extremely friendly woman or man

ex: "Make sure you wrap up tight, ol girl hella ratchet!"

general consensus is that the word is simply "wretched" mispronounced...

Ha @ the south picking up slang late from the NE. I've lived down here for 8 long years and have just started hearing slang I used to hear back home.

I kind of cringe every time I hear this word..

I've been hearing it for years in Florida though.

Visiting Tallahassee this weekend I heard it at least 100 times.

Ha @ the NE picking up English late from England.

It's not the same word, just the same sound. When we were learning homophones in second grade, what were you doing? Now go stand in the corner.
