The reason why Fila was doing great with the Grant Hills and Reebok with the Iversons back in the 90s is because there weren't any Jays. Yea a guy named Michael Jordan had Air Jordan shoes but I think back then dudes went to foot locker like "should I buy the jays or the Kemps?" because both players were relevant and whether you wanted to rock on court or off, what you copped wouldn't matter because the shoes could do both. Back then folks had variety, nike didn't own 50% of the basketball market. Nowadays they do.
Nowadays guys come into footlocker and look at the lebrons and scratch their chins and wonder should they buy them versus the KDs. Hell maybe they want the kobes. God forbid I even bring up John Walls or Dwight Howard's. But let me accidentally even mention that someone returned squadron blue 13s or even lady liberty 10s and their eyes pop out of their face "let me see um, let me see um!" Sir you asked for an 11, the Jordans are a 9.5 "don't matter I'll make em fit!" Nobody squeezed into south beach 9s. Oh and I'm so glad nike made the champ pack readily accessible after the face of their basketball line and the team he played with went on to win an NBA championship. They were so easy to cop with that 1k I had laying around. if you didn't pick up on my sarcasm what I am trying to say is, back in the 90s nike made Jordans accessible. You could buy what Jordan wore on his feet. You didn't need an IG plug to send you fake PEs
The whole sneaker game and hobby we each made SNs for and joined NT in the first place is 1. Different than how it started and 2. was catapulted by Jordans. When retros came back around we made this monster what it is today. Retros cost 170-180 last year and the year before they were $160. Now they're $190. These prices jumpin like Jordan! People will buy venom green air jordan 10s 11/10 times before they buy any Lebron XI where I'm from.
But not only was it Michael Jordan the player, it was his company keeping his name and apparel relevant. Making it "hot", capitalizing on hype before there were even hypebeasts. Nike was paying MJs fines for wearing the 1s back in 85-86. They set the precedent for what a sig shoe is. Jordans were in almost every late 80s early 90s sitcom. Watch fresh prince, watch the Jamie Foxx show, look at the covers of hella movies and albums, you'll see Jordans. Space Jam came out, he got game came out, where are the lebrons in the movies? Shoot the other day bow wow pulled out red suede 21s in a Japanese cafeteria in a movie about cars skidding down mountains, where the lebrons at in the movies?!
Bottom line is that they'll never be another Jordan. There were great players before him and there are definitely greats out now, but I'd have to see it to believe it regarding anybody coming close to the magic Mike made.
he hit his peak right before social media came out. Sure he was in the media but ppl don't remember his pops murder. They do however remember kobe in the headlines tho. They know about Vanessa. they remember what shaq said about kobe paying em off. Jordan came in the right era. The era where you had to talk to your homie the next day bout the game instead of just tweeting about it.
Like somebody said before, nike needed MJ. Nike doesn't need lebron, Nike doesn't need KD. They want lebron tho and They WANT kd which is why they paid him way more than UA did. They sign these players and hope to god they have a career like MJ. They're like investments.
Sorry for the super long post. I just wanted to post what I think
