The Official NBA Season Thread: NBA Cup Night

love OG but have we not learned our lesson after the Marcus Smart DPOY?

stop giving perimeter players DPOY.

This really should be Bostons year, especially after getting legit Finals experience last year and only adding to their depth this year.

If Gallo comes back and Rob Williams can get back to form, hard to see them being beaten in a 7 game series with that depth.

What lesson was that?

it's obviously ridiculous in hindsight.

Boston has the 17th best defense this year, with no Robert Williams.
they still have the alleged DPOY, you shouldn't go from 2nd to 17th

Robert Williams is obviously the best defender on the celtics.
people just get tired of giving it to big men.

no individual perimeter player can have the impact of a big man during the regular season.
it's simply too easy to get one individual perimeter player out of the action.

^^^ Based on the recent ACL surgery return timelines for Kawhi and Jamal
Murray, basically no chance we see Gallo play this season.

You rather just keep giving it to someone like rudy gobert bc you like dying on hills

You can screen & rescreen any bothersome perimeter defender to get him off of you, which is what happens in the playoffs.

And now this great perimeter defender is left guarding the corner shooter.

After that happens, if your big can only play drop you’re at the mercy of the offense.

Look at Trae Young for example.

Philly had 2 DPOY candidates in Simmons & Embiid. But Embiid can’t defend in space, Simmons was playing behind Trae after getting screened repeatedly or switching off of Trae entirely.

Trae averages 30. Hawks advance.

Fast forward to Miami last year, they had Bam at the 5 and went with PJ Tucker as the backup 5. Instead of playing drop like Embiid, they’re in Trae’s jersey 30 feet out.

Trae averages an embarrassing 15 ppg on 32% shooting, 18% from 3. Hawks basically get swept.

You need your perimeter players to give great effort, but ultimately your bigs are the key defensively. If they can’t switch, you just have to pray to the basketball gods.

they still need to formulate a strategy on nullifying Curry. all roads leads to making Curry ineffective offensively.

you wanna die one the marcus smart is the best defender in basketball hill?

DPOY is not a participation trophy.

sorry the way basketball rules work currently.
a guard is almost certainly not going to be the best defender in basketball

we don't need to give it to a guard because we are sick of Rudy Gobert.

I'd like to know how the Pelicans are third in defense when they're only good starter on defense is Herb Jones. Otherwise it's Nance and GTA off the bench.

Let addict4sneakers addict4sneakers tell it, defenders should never switch. Just leave that man open for a corner 3.
