Thompson has been ruled out of Wednesday's Detroit Pistons 2024-25 regular season opener, a home game against the Indiana Pacers. His designation on the injury report is "return to competition conditioning," but a team source on Wednesday clarified to the Free Press that his status remains in limbo.

Thompson, 21, has to clear the NBA's Fitness-To-Play Panel, which consists of three physicians — one appointed by the NBA, one appointed by the NBPA and one approved by both parties — who determine if it's safe for a player dealing with a life-threatening medical situation to return to basketball.
