The Official NBA Season Thread: Back and Maybe Better Than Ever Before

If I’m being completely honest about it, before his death it was not really controversial for people to not have Kobe in their top 5 (or even top 10), except to his most ardent fans.

These things obviously aren’t static and further analysis, events, achievements, etc. can justify moving guys up or down in the rankings and it’s happened with Kobe.

His “aura” gave him bonus points. The whole Mamba Mentality thing and whatnot. Plus he was a very charming and likeable guy off court for the most part. You tend to wanna give a person like that a few spots up the list, even though when you get down to pure basketball he may not “deserve” it.

I've retired from top 10 talk at this point. Tiers make more sense for me, I think there's too many guys that aren't clear cut better than the other and everyone uses different criteria to rank them.

I know it's more fun for people to put one over the other but the discourse has become tiring to me and people get too emotional over it

I doubt Durant could win 1 title with players of Pau/LO caliber in any era of the NBA, much less go back-to-back.

He has all the physical tools to be better than Kobe but he wasn’t. Something intangible was missing.

No different from a Bron/MJ discussion.

But you are correct about Kobe’s all time rank when he was alive.

I just don’t see how you can put Durant over a proven leader.

May not agree, but I can hear out someone having Curry above Kobe. Never ever gonna listen to a guy that has KD above Kobe though.
