The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

Exactly. Can't be mad that your 8 year old Mac can't get the latest update anymore. Just imagine what an 8 year old windows PC is like

Right there is nothing wrong with the current OS on your 8 year old machine lol .

Here is a link to upgrading the RAM in the 5K iMacs. Luckily they made that part really simple for you.

This HHD swap though.....

Note - Reading through this and the comments on it, you don't have to do all of these steps. You can just remove the HDD part of the fusion drive and leave the SSD portion of the fusion drive behind the logic board. You can then essentially have 2 SSDs in the iMac and just install a fresh copy on the new SSD you put in. Granted, I would still be leery of pulling the screen off like this unless you just have to have it over the fusion.

I also didn't realize the new iMacs support up to 64gb of RAM now.

@ a lot of people opting for the '15 MBP over the new joints. Apple dun goofed, but they'll never admit it.

Figured I'd get in on an iMac before they screw that up, too. Grabbed a refurb 27" 5k joint with a 2 TB fusion drive. Will probably swap it out later and go full SSD.

Anyone know the best brand to use for RAM upgrades? Looking to boost mine up to 24 GB from 8.
I've used both Crucial and OWC. Never had any issues with either.

I think I went with OWC because of their warranty and price.
Thanks for the heads up.  Yeah, I'll probably just go with OWC.  Consensus seems to be they're one of the better companies to deal with should warranty issues pop up.  Prices aren't terrible either.

If you haven't I recommend you looking into what it takes to swap out those parts on an iMac. I have a 27" one with 32gb and just a 1tb fusion. I was considering putting a true SSD in and looked up the guide and figured I didn't even want to bother with it.

In short, you have to take a plastic wedge tool and pry the entire screen off to get to it and then reseal it

I'll post the guide when I get back to my desk.
Yeah man, I did a little research on it prior to buying.  I could *probably* do it, but I don't trust myself.  I'd be super tight if I messed something up on a machine I just spent good money on.

I did find an Apple Authorized Service Provider near the crib and they said they could do it for $125, which isn't that bad.  They're insured and all that so if something goes wrong, I'm covered.  But I can't get a clearcut answer from anyone on how it would affect the warranty, which is why I went for the 2TB Fusion.  My initial plan was to just grab the base 27" and upgrade the RAM and add SSD.  But not knowing how it would affect the warranty, I figured I better get as much storage as possible for now.  If I don't buy AppleCare prior to the 1 year mark, I'll throw a SSD in without worry.

RAM upgrade is a must though.  Hopefully we'll see some Black Friday deals here soon.

Picked up my 15 inch 2016 Pro today. Absolutely loving it so far, the speakers are incredible for a laptop. Everything about the touchbar feels like a gimmick and not practical in normal applications (Safari & Messages). Once I start messing with some "pro" apps I'm sure I will see the benefits of it over time. Coming from a 12 inch MacBook, it feels so nice to have this room again :hat

I should give my brother my 2011 MBP and cop the new 13" mbp w/ touch bar :lol

Is the MacBook Air worth it to you guys? Thinking of copping for my girl, she's just watches Netflix/Hulu/YouTube and does online classes.

Yeah and they're alot cheaper too.

Maybe even look into the Macbook. A little bit more better specs and up to date ports with a retina screen. Idk if it's within your budget, but I'd look at the Macbook and MBAir and compare the two.

I was thinking about the MacBook too because she wants that rose gold color. :lol

The MacBook screen is only 12 inches. The Air is 13.3. Small, but noticeable difference.

Also doesn't have any ports aside from 1 USB-C port. Still a really nice laptop though.

Wait the MacBook has one port or the air?
My bad, the MacBook only has the USB-C port.

The Air has 2 USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, and a Thunderbolt 2 port.

The Air's battery is also much better in my experience. The Retina screen on the MB really drains its battery quick regardless of usage.

I could have sworn the air had better specs that the macbook
It does, but the lack of retina display is something that turns people away.

But for the tasks OP listed that his girl does, a MacBook would be a viable option as well.

The air lacking an IPS display is the biggest turnoff for me. The resolution is secondary.

I cant stand TN panels. They look like crap.

Just repped everyone that responded. Thanks guys. Do you guys think I should just get the air due to the better specs, or just get her the MacBook for the rose gold? 8o :{
