So, im really thinking about switching my PC for a Macbook. Actually I think I will in the next month or so. Ive been reading about it and it looks like itsmore reliable and easier to use than a PC.

I thought I would ask you guys though. What are the big differences between the Mac and PC?

I'm a Mac user and have been since the early 1990s so I have some leanings towards all things Apple. However, I have had extensive experienceof Windows computers at school, university and at home.

To clear up the definition the company name is Apple Macintosh although machines can be referred to as 'Apples', 'Macs' or 'AppleMacs'. PC stands for 'Personal Computer' but is generally used to refer to everything that isn't an Apple.

The biggest difference is operating system. The operating system is the software through which all programs are run - on PCs you load up Windows to runprograms like Word or Internet Explorer: on Macs you load up Mac OS (operating system) to run programmes written in a programming language for Macs. Theoffshoot of this is that programs (games, applications and utilities - files that 'do' things) are not compatible across the platforms. In recent yearsmany programs have been re-written for Mac OS meaning that popular applications like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer or MSN messenger are available for Macs.

On modern machines most documents (text, images, movies - files that are 'read' by users) are usually compatible between Macs and PCs. Macs have neversaved files with suffixes (such as .doc) and it is only since Macs have been increasingly integrated into a PC dominated market that the option to save withsuffixes has become integrated into the save options of programs. Thus if you are a Mac user and want to transfer files to a PC you might need to add theappropriate letters at the end so whomever you're sending the file to (i.e. via email or writable CD) can open it.

Now the subjective bit. I think that Mac design is more aesthetically pleasing than that of PCs, after all it was Apple who came up with the idea of colouredcomputers! From experience, and as Apple claims, Macs crash much less than PCs. Most Internet and email viruses have been created to damage PCs and due tocompatibility issues (see above) do not affect Macs. Although PCs are improving, I think Mac still offers a better-integrated system for managing your files, music and movies. DVDs all play on the built-in DVD player rather than the peculiar range of programs that always seem to open up when you use a PC; iTunes, inits Mac form, works perfectly with an Apple iPod, if you've got one. If you're a student Apple offer a discount to anyone shopping at their online orhighstreet stores. Incentive indeed.
