Akira(anime movie) and Cowboy Bebop are considered classics by many anime fans. I suggest you check those out.

Also for the 4y/o I would suggest Princess Monoke since it is also made by Hayao Miyazaki.

....i appreciate the recommendations, but i figured Akira was pretty much a given (i just hadnt gotten around to seeing it yet). i figured it must be some sort of list of classic movie anime along the lines of the previous ones i have seen. any more?
 
....Cowboy Bebop? okay. ill put that on my Netflix. but when it comes to good anime is the best stuff in movies or a series?
