That BB is one of the better mudguards on them and doesn't look awful tbh. Most go down super thin and angled.

I had the 2023 Big Bubbles after wanting the University Red colorway for so long, but I really didn't like the midsole change around the larger air unit. Something about that seam running through it that interrupts the horizontal grooves looks off to me. I didn't mind the shape of the upper, but unlike the 95 I can do without a Big Bubble for this model

Yeah this seems to be the sentiment. 87's over BB's in terms of overall looks, and I agree.

It's all opinion. Everyone is welcome to one. Personally I don't like the upper on the BB, in 86 and 2023. I don't like the super slanted mudguard that dives down onto an angle. I much prefer the traditional thicker mudguard that flows and wraps the shoe. All of these new MLB pairs look awful bc they have the same upper. The toe box is much wider and rounded too. I was excited for the BB when they showed a pair a year before the release that had a 2017 upper on a BB midsole. That's not what we ended up getting.

I'm old as dirt too but sometimes things get better over time and I think the am1 upper is an example of that.

This is the teaser pair from Air Max Day 2022 that I referred to. I wish this is what we got.

I'm probably in the minority of those that like the Big Bubbles. I actually like that they look different than the 87's. But I also wondered why they didn't look like this pic. I'm sure the answer is probably Nike being Nike, but does anyone know why Nike changed the design from those in this Pic to what they ultimately released?

IIRC the big bubble did in fact release in 86, something like a preproduction I guess. There were some quality issues with the midsole and air unit seeing as this was the first time visible air was ever done. Nike tweeked the midsole and we ended up with what we now know as 87s which were released more widely in 1987. At least that’s the lore I recall from memory. Someone correct me if I’m off.
You could very well be right. I'm going off of memory, I do know for certain though that I stared at that pair of AM1 disintegrate throughout my 7th grade year. I wanted a pair so bad. :emoji_disappointed_relieved:

I could never find any newspaper ads for the Nike Air Max before 1987.

My guess is the BB is the first retail version available primarily from early 87
to early 88 (but would have still been on some shelves after that alongside the V2
most are familiar with.)

Therefore - It makes sense to me that someone with great interest in this shoe
from the start (when it released) would prefer the BB.

At that time - my attention was on the Air Trainer line.

Pretty sure the first ad was 3/26/87, that's why 3/26 is Air Max Day now. Pairs with the bigger bubbles were produced in 1986, hence they are called 86's. No way for anyone to know if they hit a shelf in December of 86 or February of 87. Those bags failed and they moved to smaller ones at some point in 1987.

I have these old ads labeled as follows:

This is my favorite Nike running shoe (obsidian or navy blue colorway) but I have to defer to the experts for the model here.

I've wondered when exactly the change occurred.

Big Bubble or small?... or something in between...?...

I think we're losing perspective on how different Nike was back then. They weren't anything remotely close to what they are now. It's likely they were making 86's and 87's at the same time for a bit in 87 to see which worked better and eventually went full on with the 87's at some point. It wouldn't be surprising at all of their ad showed a BB while they were producing the smaller bags. They just weren't the well oiled machine they grew into later. They were piecing together where they could.

I agree that cat pics aren't always up to date or accurate & both variations may have been produced at the same time or close (perhaps even factory dependent) - but when would that have been exactly is what I've wondered?

I doubt even Tinker could answer that at this point. I think "sometime in 1987" is the best you'll get for when they switched bags.
