Bulls, Rose come together
A NEW ERA | No. 1 draft pick, Noah, Thomas to team up in summer league

BY BRIAN HANLEY [email protected]

It was the presence of Tyrus Thomas as much as the single stem roses found throughout the United Center news conference Monday which suggested the blossoming of a new era for the Bulls.

Bulls general manager John Paxson and new coach Vinny Del Negro flanked Derrick Rose on either side as they sat in front of the full room.

Rose spoke of how Thomas and other veterans have helped him transition from the top pick in the draft last week to teammate this week.

''I was just asking questions about the team,'' Rose said. ''They said just to be humble and stay focused. I think I can lead the team. Of course with the veterans, I have to listen about what they do about detail.''

Paxson said Thomas and Joakim Noah will be part of the Bulls' summer league team, which begins practice Thursday and plays its first game in Orlando on Monday.

It is unusual for a player entering his third season, such as Thomas, to take part in summer league. But Thomas said the idea of helping Rose start his career, combined with having witnessed some of the Boston Celtics run to the NBA championship, made him decide to participate. Thomas was in Boston to support Celtics forward Glen Davis, his former LSU teammate.

''It was my choice,'' Thomas said. ''After winning 33 games, you want to do whatever it takes to get better and win. Me playing a couple of summer league games is not going to hurt, it's going to help to acclimate Derrick and build more chemistry with Joakim. If that's what it takes to get to that level where you want to get, it's a small sacrifice.''

Rose was headed to the Berto Center immediately after the news conference for his first workout since draft Thursday and the whirlwind of interviews which followed.

''Working out hard, listening to all the veteran players on the team, and of course coach,'' Rose said of his plans. ''Just sucking it in and learning from everyone.''

Thomas said he has yet to give Rose any basketball advice.

''After day three or four of doing all the media stuff after being drafted, you just want to relax and chill,'' Thomas said. ''But he wants to win, he has a positive attitude. That's what we need right now. I see some good things with me and him, being able to get up and down the floor. I think it's going to be real good for us.''

Rose said the summer will be ''a learning process'' for him and Del Negro, who has no coaching experience. Del Negro is expected to hire his staff as early as today. Bernie Bickerstaff, an NBA veteran of more than 30 years, is expected to be named as an assistant coach. He was head coach at Seattle, Denver, and Washington and also was GM at Denver and head of basketball operations at Charlotte.

''All the guys I've brought in, I've had a relationship with in some way,'' Del Negro said. ''The experience factor for me is important. The camaraderie of the staff is important; how guys are going to work together, and the roles they'll have. So far I'm really happy the direction it's going. But I'm the head coach and I'm going to make the final say.''

Del Negro also expects to take it slow with Rose, who will wear No. 1.

''I'll put Derrick in situations in which he's comfortable,'' Del Negro said. ''We'll talk about it and we'll grow every day. I'll monitor that best I can. As he becomes more comfortable, and as I do, then I'll let him go a little more.''
I'm glad to see that Tyrus is showing more maturity

Bernie Bickerstaff and Bob Ociepka have agreed to terms to be assistant coaches on Vinny Del Negro's first staff, sources said.

Negotiations with Del Harris hit some snags but are ongoing, meaning neither side would be surprised if talks concluded successfully or broke off.

Bob Hill is no longer under consideration, sources said, and Paul Westphal's status is unclear. Hill, Westphal, Harris and Bickerstaff all are veteran head coaches who were sought to assist Del Negro's transition.

Bickerstaff is 414-512 in stints with Seattle, Denver, Washington and Charlotte. He last coached in 2006-07, going 33-49 with the Bobcats before moving into management.
Ociepka owns 18 seasons of assistant-coaching experience with eight franchises, including his most recent stint in Minnesota. The Chicago native played atdownstate Quincy College and also coached Gordon Tech and York High Schools. He's a member of the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame.

Besides veteran coaches, the Bulls will hire younger, development-type assistant coaches. Mike Brownserved in that capacity last season.

Man I am excited about the connection between Rose and Thomas. This is going to be a good year!

Who will Derrick Rose dunk on this year?

Del Harris is expected to sign as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls today, ending his nine year tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Morning News is reporting.

Harris joined the Mavericks in 2000 and was top assistant to Don Nelson until Nelson gave over the coaching reins to Avery Johnson in 2005. Harris served as a consultant last season.

New Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle has already signed Dwane Casey and Terry Stotts as assistants and likely will have Mario Elie and one other coach on the staff.

Derrick Rose, the No. 1 draft choice of the Chicago Bulls and the NBA, will step into a Kane County court to face charges of driving more than 100 m.p.h. on the Reagan Tollway, his attorney said Tuesday.

Rose, 19, who lives in Chicago's West Englewood community, was driving a 2008 Land Rover on April 29 when he was stopped at 2:58 a.m. about a mile west of Illinois Highway 47 for allegedly going 106 m.p.h. in a 65-m.p.h. zone, according to Kane County court records. He is scheduled to appear in court July 11.

I really like this hiring

i do also as long as he stays as a asstant coach

bring inPaul Westphal's also to help the offense out and we should be good

I love how thomas wants to play summer league. This is great news. He is going to be integral to the bulls developement. This year is very important to him, ithink if he messes up career over, cut the dude hes got problems, if he gets his act together though and utilizes his skills team is gonna be nasty. Adds somuch athleticism and if he gets that mid range consistent = game over.

Duhon seems committed to leaving from what ive heard from different reports aka orlando and other places... hinrich might get bounced... so who exactly isgoing to be our backup point guard???

its irresponsible not to have a legit backup for a rookie point guard like rose. Even if its more as a mentor. Point guard is the most difficult position tocome into the league and play right away because it brings leadership responsibilities and we need someone there helping him out.

Larry Hughes needs to bounce with the quickness so i didnt include him for my own sake. Get gordon and deng resigned, keep nocioni and this team is gravy

rose
gordon-needs to start now sixth man !#%%+%%! is over
deng
gooden
noah

nocioni sixth man
tyrus thomas
thabo
sign backup pg (nichols aint doin #+%@)

We need to go out there and get brevin knight or some #+%@ haha

I cannot wait to see Rose don our jersey. I am gonna try and get down for the home opener. My cuzo has some good hookups for the UC now.

^hes not .... i was making fun of it being sarcastic, like what if duhon and hinrich bounce and were left with nichols kinda thing, but seriously what we gonnado for a backup point guard?

what about luke ridnour? he would seem to fit iwth del negros plan of a free flowing offence and when healthy he aint bad
