The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- Cannonier, Imavov, Reyes, Rosas on NOW

It's crazy that even today...some folks think Jon lost that fight. I listened to the MK with the Man in the Hat and Luke/Chuck had Dominic winning that fight with Jon.

I don't go around saying HWs are super technical in anything but Cyril no joke. His skills are similar to a LHW...maybe even MW.

They are very different kickboxers though. Thiago is more flat foot and likes to sit down on all his shots. Has no where near the movement or foot work that Cyril has, which I see giving Jon more problems.

Cyril has much higher stats than Thiago in every striking category, even doubking his lands per minute.

So what you're saying is the Cocaine Bear is back...and sleeping on Cyril Gain (that's how Jon pronounces his last name)?

I thought he pronounced his name "gone" 🤷‍♂️

Tough fight to call though, if JJ is able to take Gane down I could see it going in favor of Bones via decision. JJ could follow the Francis gameplan and try to outwrestle him, lot of storylines in this one like how rusty is JJ, will his takedowns translate to HW, is he hungry again, has Gane worked on his TDD, will Gane be able to keep JJ at bay with strikes, etc.

If Francis was able to out wrestle Gane, then it seems more probable than not that Bones will do the same.

...he'd be a fool to try to outstrike him.

I won't lie Olympic Trials Jon was getting the best of DC. Motivated, Jon is a dangerous man. It's just the weight and father time that is the concern.

Gain (like Jon likes to say it) is a good boy. When he survived that exchange from Tai, I was impressed. His wrestling or TDD will be the test this fight (if Jon can close the distance).

It's almost like Jon isn't giving Cyril the respect he deserves.

That’s what gives me pause but then again mma math doesn’t always compute

Gane was probably weary of Francis’ power and might not have been training much or at all for sprawls and wrestling

Have to figure the one way jon can win is controlling him

We’ve seen jon get lit up on the feet by at least three opponents

As much as I don’t buy blaydes as the best hw, a match with him and Jones would be intriguing

Personally I think Jon would nullify the takedowns and pick Curtis Blaydes apart on the feet.

...but it would be interesting to see if Blaydes could use his size to power through some double legs.

While I don't think Ganes TDD is great or elite, I think the Francis fight had more to do with being caught by surprise and not expecting a heavy wrestling game plan at all.

Really my biggest concern for Gane is that Fernand and their team can't make mid fight adjustments. They really need to dictate the fight at all times. We saw it vs. Ngannou and Imavovs main event vs. Strickland. He offers no technical advice if they're down rounds or they really need to bank one. So they better not come with their usual 1 plan fight because Jones' IQ and mid round adjustments are elite.

Gane also can't go for them weak *** leg locks if he ends up in a 50/50 spot. Jon will end up mauling tf out of him.

Can’t wait for Saturday

besides the typical hype to see jon back, can’t wait to see the silent killer shavkat back

Just outside of eight weeks so he's definitely doing something, something.

Henry wasn't featured in the Countdown or Embedded episode one. Definitely have seen Brandon Gibson (his striking/boxing coach) and Greg Jackson.

Watched the countdown and Jones showcasing his all star heavyweight training partners of Walt Harris and Yorgan De Castro had me ******* dead

And.......Morris Green!!

All the swimming footage isn't helping either. I think it's cool he can swim down and get bricks. But how does that affect his performance? And how's the speed? Is he really inspired? Tweets low key down playing Cyril have me worried.

His definition of Dad shoes is pretty colourful.

Separately why on earth does Jon Jones need a swimming coach its not like he's gonna be swimming competitively anytime soon.

I think people have always underestimated the massive height/reach advantage that Jon Jones had at LHW.

You take that advantage away and a lot of his kickboxing skills seem very rudimentary.

If he can't dictate where the fight takes place, i.e. takedowns and ground control, he's losing this fight.

...at least I hope so.

I don't think anyone underestimated it. His most difficult fights have been with those who were similar sizes (Santos, Gustafson 1, and Reyes).

We all know Jon is a better wrestler than Francis. We just don't know how father time has affected him and how he'll perform at HW.

The other thing about Jon is, when he's inspired, he'll try to beat his opponent at their own game (see: Glover and DC 1). Three years is a long time. Maybe he's a slick striker now.

That's the exciting thing about this fight. Questions will be answered. But I agree, Davey, if it stays on the feet Cyril Gain might pick him apart. LHW doesn't have a lot of slick strikers.

A lot of swimming workout footage. Is there an issue with Jon's knee's? Or just minimizing sparring and workout footage? Also big upping Maurice Green, Walt Harris, and Mike Rodriguez isn't a huge clout. Cyril used to train with Francis.

I think if Jon avoids the KO he beats Cyril fairly handedly.....

If Cyril don't get the KO in rounds 1-2, its gonna be a long night for him

Jon loves to fight all 25 American minutes

I don't expect a flashy fight from Jon, he will wear down and outpoint Cyril if he has to.
