The Combat Jack Show Thread

I don't think black people have a issue with artists experimenting. Black artists have always experimented and done different things and changed the current popular sound. Everybody's just not gonna like the same thing. I remember when The Love Below came out, some people hated it, some people loved it. Same with 808's & Heartbreak.

Music fans in general build a expectation for certain artist and have a hard time adjusting if that artist changes their style up.

_'s doing this with Solange is wild tho bruh , this ain't like Chris Brown getting all extra experimental out of nowhere.

We just have a weird relationship with this type ****

Reminds me of when Solange directed SZA's 'The Weekend' video. The video trended on Twitter because of how much ppl actually hated that ****. It ended up being kinda abstract and _'s was mad because they was expecting a literal line by line interpretation of the song like one of those corny 90's love triangle videos

What turned me off most about the album is the repetition. It felt uninspired. I plan on listening again just to get a feel for the overall vibe of the album, but 50% of your album is what you're saying. She really isn't saying anything here.

I listened to 30 minutes of it, and felt I only listened to five songs.

This was by design as well

I dont think people are noticing a lot of the songs are purposely overlapped and bled into each other. Seem like its crafted to be listened to like a LP where you just throw it on and vibe out.

Ex. If you just went and pressed play on 'Time (is)' you can still hear Carti's vocals from the previous track at the beginning

Then don't repeat 'I saw things I Imagined' 37 times on the intro, b.

I mean in the sense like, if words are 50% of the composition how would you rate a jazz album with no words?

Look at the views of Yeezus too. Some _'s love it, some don't.

Very true, Yeezus is a good example of experimenting but it didn't pay off from the general public's viewpoint

I listened to 30 minutes of it, and felt I only listened to five songs.

Album is just almost 40 mins long tho lol

That's the other thing, so many songs are less than 2.5 mins and you repeating so much it comes off like you ain't really try.

Come on bro, you know what I meant.

Her album is clearly intended to be instrumental and vocals. Obviously I'm not applying that rule to a Kenny G album. She grab a saxophone and I'll shut up.

Yeah she's not really a typical artist. You already know she's gonna do her shea butter and incense thing. I haven't finished her album but I liked what I heard. Loved that Dreams record, Time record is real good too.

Nah I do know what you mean

I think my point is just that we gotta throw out all these rules and **** bro, be less rigid in our approach and just take **** for what it is. Not saying you gotta be extremely open minded to the point you like everything, cause truth is sometimes we just don't like some ****

I don't think the presence of vocals on a track automatically mean they have to assume a certain role or sound a certain way either tho.

I actually think she tapped Carti for this album because a lot of his music is kinda similar to this approach. On some of his songs the vocals almost seem like they exist purely to just complement and weave through the beat vs him tryna "dominate" it

Edit: In a similar way it's also like when _'s like Budden be talking about how 4:44 was mixed wrong/bad. Jay said the point of that **** was for it sound like a personal convo, like a _ actually in your ear giving you game. He felt like the message wouldn't have been felt the same if mixed "correctly"

Fair. I don't disagree with anything you said. I think our tendancy to place something in one of two boxes (trash or classic) kind of limits the kind of expression we see in hip hop. Not to be accepting of everything, but more nuance is definitely needed in these discussions. I don't know if I can necessarily say that this album is bad, but it just doesn't seem to have much direction.

But like I said, it was on in the background and I kinda started tuning out after the 14th 'I saw what I imagined'.

The use of vocals as more of an instrument and a part of the melody has become more and more prominent in rap lately, so maybe I need to check it through that lens. Hip me to Carti, because I'm old as ****.

I think one of the biggest steps to accomplish that is for people to use more descriptive words outside of "trash" and "classic"
nah if something good i say it was good
or if it was ok i say that as well

A lot of the time trash is applicable where classic is not.

I was tellin' one of the older guys I work with about this about Thug around Lifestyle hype or even looking at how Kanye's "scoop-poop" ish is pretty much the same thing as Jazz scatting

nah if something good i say it was good
or if it was ok i say that as well

But you know most folks won't, if they like it it's fire if they don't it's trash.

I've called few things trash these last few years Papoose's Golden Child is the latest. That song is performed bad, written bad, but has a sweet purpose

People really trying to force themselves to like Solange music. Crazy how she just became popular out of the blue the last 2-3 years. Orlando Jones music was getting no love before then

what nter faked liked teyana album
talking about they would still be listening to it now :nerd:

No Manners
Gonna Love Me

Rose in Harlem
Never Would Have Made

All still fire

Teyana’s EP is one of the few new projects I play. I don’t really check new music anymore but her **** is still getting played. I got Rose In Harlem on right now.

She had my favorite EP out of all those Kanye EPs

Did y’all watch Love and hip Hop tonight?

Everybody acting like some **** :smh:

Maino supposed to be this real G but he in the studio spilling tea on Safaree then setting him up for an ambush

Yandy the fakest broad on TV. Clowning Safaree behind his back but then want to be all over him when he shows up

Rich Dolla daughter want to become a stripper and he worrying about who Safaree having sex with

Safaree pouting in the corner like a *****

Joseph crying all over television about this attention *** Cynthia

Felt like Mona kind of gave up on the season a couple episodes ago. They made no effort to tie up all the storylines they introduced. She definitely realized this was some trash and cut her losses
