Why no relay team as a punishment? What if there were a team of legit 'We didn't have NOTHING to do with all'at and we can prove it' athletes that were just born in the wrong country? Why can't they also be Team Independent?

If the country fā€™s up there is no central association amongst the athletes

There are a number of individual athletes who donā€™t have the benefit of being on a relay team or having teammates on their level to make them legit competitive.. itā€™s nothing new

Itā€™s a way to punish the country while still giving individual athletes an opportunity

My solution is to ban Russia for an olympic cycle, and let the athletes themselves compete for any country that will have them, under that country's name and flag. Any country. Moscow-born skater gets an offer to skate for Moldova? Approved. St Petersburg-born hockey player wants to skate for Canada since he plays professionally there? Approved. The Russian hockey team has an offer from Ghana to skate under their flag? Approved.

Not perfect but it punishes Russia and still gives the athletes a chance to compete, so long as they dont have any ******* positive drug tests ffs.

I don't disagree with what you say - and it is clearly terrible for those clean athletes who just happen to be Russian.

One problem I have with relay events is that you are relying on others - there have been a number of cases over the years of a single member of a relay team (usually the 4x100m) being busted and that results in them all losing the medals. That's a risk you take in a team event I suppose.

none of this is really new, to a degree

you remove Russia from the equation

athletes can either participate as independents under no flag

or for some athletes, they can then transfer to other countries.. like Vladimir Morozov should have been swimming for the US but his application didnā€™t get approved in time before an international competition and he has since stuck it out with Russia.. But he has clear US ties

this guy swam for USA as a junior.. then for Canada in 1 olympics.. then italy last olympics

After seeing the Russian coaches after girl lostā€¦Iā€™m thinking her family and their families are in a gulag right now. Putin prob had them in holding cell during the free skate.

Yeah. Has me thinking if any athlete left russia and tried to compete for another country there would be bad consequences.

Eteri really wanted to sweep the podium, she gets half of the earnings of all her skaters

That's actually probably the worst thing about all this - particularly the skating. My wife watched a documentary after we watched the skating talking about it - they take these kids away from their family, starve them, drug them, put them in a hostile competitive environment and then cast them out a couple years later in poor health with all sorts of physical and mental problems. You can bet that they can't say anything about it because of fear of repercussions. It's not that different from when it was the Soviet Union and East Germany doing the same things.

The whole system is rotten and all of these people need to be run out of town. Skating and gymnastics seem to be the worst offenders, probably because young girls are good at them. We've seen it with that Nike project thing too though when US girls were not quite being abused - but pretty close - and ended up with eating disorders and other issues.

It does seem that elite sport isn't a very healthy environment but this sort of situation takes it way too far.

^ aint just Russia

go listen to the 30 for 30 podcast they did on the karolyis and they shh they did to those poor girls and how much USA gymnastics and everyone involved enabled them.. and it was a situation the doctor took advantage off

could only imagine how much worse it gets elsewhere

they need to do a way better job explaining this

swimming is a sport that is especially easy to get burnt out

dude hasnā€™t been practicing for months and just somewhat recently started training again

him even getting as close as he has to making the US team is impressive as hell (came 3rd in the 50 fly and did pretty solid in the 100 fly)

If people want a better discussion on the sport of swimming currently and that swim meet, itā€™s this

because the menā€™s team no longer has guys like Michael Phelps and Ryan lochte.. or even dressel.. they are now facing issues with the cap limit of the roster selection.. because you knew those guys were swimming at least 3 events or more individually and relays

and while they made it well known the priority order guys would be selected.. it seems pretty obviously flawed

you have some guys who you know wonā€™t be swimming an individual event at all and more than likely will only be swimming the prelims for the relays (only an issue for the 2 freestyle relays.. as with the medley 1/2 guys who qualifies for stroke events swims prelims and other swims the final)

so you have a guy like Michael Andrew who won the 50 fly at the qualifying meet and currently 3rd in the world in that event, not on the team because of roster limits.. but they took relay only guys

and bigger problem is you have guys who could slot in for a pretty good 100 free for prelim relay purposes on the roster (guys like Ryan Murphy, Shaine casas and even Michael Andrew himself could all put up very solid 100 free times.. also drew kibler)

sooo using Drew kibler as an example and who is on the roster, he finished 8th in the 100 free individually and only .24 slower in the final than the 6th place guy who got a roster spot by finishing 6th.. but itā€™s probably the 3rd place guy who only finished 3rd by .01 who should lose his spot as the guys who finished 4th-6th have an individual event

the more interesting part is if McIntosh will decide to swim the event at the Olympics (so you would get both of them shaved and tampered) given whats going be an extremely demanding schedule

itā€˜s not even the volume of events, but sheā€™s literally taking on the most taxing events (400 IM, 200 fly and potentially those mid distance frees)
