Either way the Kanter thing is not good.

You either sign him to hopefully appease KD, and have a guy who couldn't guard the referee in a game of 1 on 1. Or you let him walk, maybe you make KD mad, but not any less of a contender, and keep flexibility.


Edit: To clarify, Kanter is actually a good player. But that money, that team, their salary situation. It's got limited upside, and huge explosive potential.

Man for the 15th billionth time

Signing Kanter changes nothing for OKCs ability to add players, nothing! They are over the cap with him or without him so it's not like they can give his 70M to someone else if they didn't give it to him.

As long as he doesn't injure himself he can he traded for pick with ease.

The literally the only thing they can lose with signing is paying the luxury tax.

No flexibility is being gained or lost by signing him

Nah man.. I think they go heavy with the rotations, especially with the bigs and the main 3.. Try to keep everyone fresh and healthy for the playoffs

Sure Doesn't matter for this year. But next year? 8o

Let's play a fun game of math:

KD - $21.166mil cap hold
Westbrook - $17.769
Ibaka - $12.250mil
Singler - $4.676mil
Collison - $3.750mil
Adams - $3.140mil TO
McGeary - $1.526mil TO
Roberson - $2.183mil TO

That is 8 players $66mil total salaries. $23mil or more in cap space. If the cap stays at $89mil. But this year's cap was supposed to be $67.1mil, ended up at $70mil. Could open it up even more by dropping Roberson.


Assuming they let go of.

Waiters - $6.77mil QO
PJIII - $3.03mil QO


Instead when they could have had a 25% max cap space in hand. They now have only $6mil in cap space because Kanter is getting $17mil next season. And since $6mil means probably nothing in 2016 because cap is going up 40+%, they end up keeping Waiters.

So they basically hurt their flexibility. This the team going forward. And Kanter doesn't make them any more of a contender.

That trade stuff, isn't always there because even with a huge increase in cap. $17mil for Kanter is a lot of money.

Why are you only looking at this year when OKC doesn't need him to contend this year?

Next year the cap jumps up to just below 90.

With no Kanter on the roster, renounce Waiters & Perry Jones, waive Morrow's unguaranteed deal, count KD's cap hold & OKCs payroll is around 66.

So that's 20+ mil in cap space to go at a big fish with Durant, Russ, & Ibaka already accounted for.

So signing Kanter absolutely hurts their ability to add talent.

Oklahoman's and Thunder fans alike are going to have to learn to love him, or do what comes natural and use him as the blame guy when convenient, or when they need to whine a bit.

We always have a blame guy, from Sooners to Pokes to Thunder. It's what we do.

If two NBA teams were willing to give Kanter 70ms for 4 years I can guarantee at least two NBA teams are going to be willing to give him 53 over 3 ESPECIALLY after the cap jump

Only risk is him injuring himself
 
It's a climate where Wes Matthews gets $15 million per after blowing out his achilles and Brandon Knight is a 70 million dollar man. Teams are showing us visibly who they're invested in in the next 5-10 years, because they're handing out long-term deals to those who they could benefit off of in the future if they blossom into a star. Kanter loves it. Middleton loves it. It's security that's not yet earned.

The money trail in this offseason's deals specifically is a public broadcast of how much promise a franchise has in a certain player in their future, investing long-term deal $ to them before they've earned it in the hopes that it will be a steal when the cap comes close to doubling in size.

Block all of Presti's trades last season and all else equal you have Payne as backup, an extra roster spot and $3 mil saved, Morrow, Robes, Jones or Huestis at back up SF and $5 mil / yr saved. Time to more fully utilize Adams and MCGary and $17mil saved and a roster spot. No Novak, roster spot. No luxury tax. Two 1st rounders saved. Exceptions to use on others. Pleiss and Jarrett still available as chips but no commitment.
