So, my lady and I are planning a trip out to SoCal (LA and SD area) in August. We're going to hit up the SD zoo, any other places we should visit or food spots?

For L.A., it depends on what you want to do, shop or see cool places or what.


I like runyon canyon and griffith park for running/hiking. Nice views.

Food places, lots of people say Roscoe's chicken and waffles, In n Out. I like Lamonica's pizza in Westwood, and Abbots pizza in Santa Monica, by SMC.

3rd street, and Santa Monica is nice.

Lots of cool things to do at Newport Beach, rent bikes, boats, etc.

Might want to check out the Getty Center, great place to take a girl with that flower garden. Good views there.

I heard the Griffith Observatory is cool, but I've never been there. Signal Hill is a nice spot at night, lots of people go there though.

Restaurant Row in L.A. has a lot of famous spots to eat.

#5.  Downtown L.A. has this event every week called ArtWalk.  People walk around, drink, browse through different exhibits, and all the gourmet food trucks come out. http://www.downtownartwalk.com/

It's right off the pier and you just pick your fish, crab, mussels, whatever and they cook it to order. Steam it or fry it.

The fresh sea urchin is ridiculously good.  Oh, it's patio seating so you're just sitting on newspaper covered tables. Nothing too fancy.

BUT, if you want fancy:  

Gladstones in Malibu http://www.sbe.com/gladstones (great surf and turf)

or Chart House in Malibu or Redondo Beach (2 locations) http://www.chart-house.com/  (probably the prime rib you will ever have)

both of these are beachside spots, averaging around $100 for two.

i suggest aquarium of the pacific over birch aquarium, there's way more things to see.

there's a seafood restaurant in downtown san diego called the oceanaire (theoceanaire.com) pricey, but has a great selection of seafood. you might want to make a reservation, unless you're going non-peak hours.
