Any other customer service position is paid at least minimum wage. Servers are paid below minimum wage and usually have to pay into a tip pool for back of house staff. They choose this position because it gives you flexibility to pursue other things and gain cash nightly. Some make a career out of it because they're good at what they do.
So we do understand where he is coming from, it's just that it makes no sense. Takeout and go home. No one gets offended.

Because the fine dining experience entails tipping your waiters/waitresses. It is expected and that's just how it is. You have the option of not tipping, but you will face the repercussions if you choose not to.
I think people get confused because tipping is optional. They feel that having the choice means that they shouldn't see a decline in service either way.
Supporting a business is helping support the employee's wages, so I don't really understand your middle sentence.

people are not trying to support the businesses or help waiters out, people are trying to get a meal. the cost on the menu is what the company is willing to sell the food for and paying extra is charity
It doesn't matter what they are trying to do. At the end of the day, giving a business your money is supporting the business.

if you intend to get food and nothing else, you can do that without tipping. if you intend to support the business then you can give money away to the waiters after your meal.
Purchasing food involves exchanging money for said food. Giving money to the business = supporting the business. Therefore, purchasing food from a business = supporting the business.

I don't get this "well you can't just not let them have a livable wage!" Talk when there are soooooo many other jobs that don't either. For some reason someone bussing tables deserves hand outs and not the lady at the mall or the secretary at your school...... But the waitress!! OMG tip them!
And yes "get a better job" is easier said and done but the cold hard truth is.... TOO BAD. People bust their but to put them in better positions. That's life
If someone works at McDonald's people already assume they're lazy and deserve min wage. A waiter for some reason is a go getter that deserves their bills to be paid for. Funny thing is the both do the SAME THING

Pretty sure you've never worked in the education field. That vacation is mandatory to keep your sanity and that GREAT insurance you're talking about is to keep them out of jail more so than anything. The legal liabilities as a teacher FAR exceed the risk/reward situation.
And I wasn't comparing the profession, I was comparing the feeling of obligation people deemed was necessary to tip waiters because they don't make enough. There are far more important jobs where people don't get paid enough to do what they do. I pointed out teachers don't get paid enough for what they have to do and are responsible for. Tip them

And I'll be Damb, I'm assuming you never worked in the medical field, what can we do to keep OUR sanity?
They sure as hell ain't giving us, WEEKENDS, holidays or summers off....there are no snow days, I've had to walk 3 miles in 16 inches of snow before because my car was stuck, buses were not running and calling out was not an option...so please tell me how hard teachers got it...

Everyone working in a hospital isn't making Doctor money, hell we have some doctors here on NT that will tell you, they not even making that much, 10 years in the BOE you making probably more than a 10 year nurse (not specialized) they def making more than nursing assistants....they probably making more than me or just as much...throw in all the extra benefits and I'm sorry but I donot feel sorry for teachers....talmbout tip a teacher

You don't have to feel sorry for ANYONE. THATS THE POINT. They alluded to having to tip because they felt sorry that servers didn't make enough to live. My point wasn't tip teachers :x
