Worst-case scenario: O'Neal is done, but in the 2009-10 season he is a US$23-million expiring contract/trade chip to be bartered before the most anticipated free-agent class in league history, which could theoretically include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Kobe Bryant, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki, Manu Ginobili, Carlos Boozer, Michael Jordan, Jesus, Pele, and Tiger Woods, or thereabouts. Even if he isn't dealt, O'Neal's deal comes off the cap in time to re-sign Bosh, and for some shopping.

The New Jersey Nets and Milwaukee Bucks are on the verge of a trade that will send Richard Jefferson to the Bucks for forwards Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources told ESPN.com that the deal has been agreed to and submitted for league approval in advance of Thursday night's draft. No draft picks are involved in the trade, sources said. ESPN.com
Pending physicals, it will send T.J. Ford, centre Rasho Nesterovic, the Raptors' pick in tonight's draft (17th overall) and another warm body to Indiana (to make the financials work) in exchange for 29-year-old centre Jermaine O'Neal. Because of Ford's base-year deal, the trade will not be announced officially until at least July 9, at the conclusion of the NBA's mandated moratorium period. Colangelo wasn't going to spill this one himself yesterday when he sat down with the local media to go over the various draft scenarios, but he hinted at it strongly. Toronto Sun
The Grizzlies have been in constant communication with the Miami Heat about the possibility of moving up to No. 2 for the chance to draft Michael Beasley. In Memphis' view, Miami is asking for too much. Memphis Commercial Appeal
Miami asked for Mike Miller, Kyle Lowry or Mike Conley and the No. 5 pick in a package that would also include the Memphis taking a bad contract or two (i.e. Mark Blount, Marcus Banks, etc.). The Grizzlies preference was to send Miller, Lowry and the No. 28 pick. The No. 5 pick and Conley are sticking points with Conley serving as an absolute deal-breaker. With both teams being motivated, stay tuned to a variation of those discussions should a trade happen. Memphis Commercial Appeal
The Griz front office seemed divided on the proposed New York deal: Memphis sending Brian Cardinal and No. 5 for David Lee and Malik Rose. It's a terrible deal, and it's also telling that the transaction wasn't presented to owner Michael Heisley, who said emphatically that unloading Cardinal's contract wasn't a priority. Memphis Commercial Appeal
The Knicks and Blazers are said to be discussing a deal that would send Lee to Portland along with the No. 6 pick and another player for Portland's 13th and 27th selections and Steve Blake or Jarrett Jack. NY Newsday
An Eastern Conference executive has told Newsday that he believes the Miami Heat will, in fact, select Michael Beasley with the second pick in the draft tonight. Late speculation that Pat Riley has reservations about Beasley's character and prefers USC guard O.J. Mayo, is a smokescreen, the executive said. NY Newsday
DeSagana Diop may be headed back to the Mavericks. The team for which Diop played nearly three seasons before getting traded to New Jersey in February may be prepared to offer him its full mid-level exception, an NBA source said Wednesday. That would mean a starting salary of about $5.5 million for Diop, the 7-foot center who was popular not only with fans but in the locker room as a part-time starter with the Mavericks. Dallas Morning News
It appears now more than ever they will keep Josh Howard. Dallas Morning News
The Portland Trail Blazers have intensified discussions with the New Jersey Nets about moving up into the 10th pick of the NBA draft with intentions of taking Texas point guard D.J. Augustin, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday. The Blazers would send the 13th and 33rd picks in Thursday's draft, along with guard Jarrett Jack, to the Nets. New Jersey also would send guard Trenton Hassell to the Blazers. Yahoo
Another rumor has Miami sending the No. 2 and Shawn Marion to the Los Angeles Clippers for No. 7 and Elton Brand. Such a deal would break the Bulls' hearts, since Brand qualifies as their dream acquisition this summer. Arlington Heights Daily Herald
The Nuggets on Wednesday shipped the No. 20 pick in the first round to Charlotte for a future protected first-round pick. That leaves the Nuggets, who already were without a second-round pick and didn't foresee a No. 20 selection playing much next season, with no picks entering the draft Thursday night. One player the Lakers probably won't be acquiring is Sacramento forward Ron Artest, who holds a one-year player option for $7.4 million, but Artest has said he would opt out only if he could make more money as a free agent. The most the Lakers could offer would be the mid-level exception of about $6 million a year for up to five years. LA Times
