Ali Larijani, the speaker of parliament and an ally of the Supreme Leader, praised those responsible for the assault yesterday, saying their "wrath" had "resulted from several decades of domination-seeking behaviour of Britain". Newspapers in Tehran linked to hardline factions were similarly jubilant, providing glowing coverage of the incident, which summoned memories of the storming of the US embassy after the revolution of 1979."

"Safar Ali Eslamian Koupaei, the Iranian Charge D'Affaire in London, was summoned to the Foreign Office and told to close his embassy immediately. All 18 Iranian diplomats in Britain will depart by Thursday. Mr Koupaei appeared surprised by the strength of the British response and the Iranian foreign ministry criticised a "hasty" step."
