Out of all the terrible off seasons this is stacking up to be one of the worst
They've always played in the fan's faces but they're taking it up a notch this year

I'll admit to being a casual these days about players not on the M's but who da **** is that guy!?! Did he show promise or what? On Baseball Reference I see he's only appeared in 50 & 60 games last two seasons with very unsexy #'s.
I mean I'll still attend a couple games or so this summer because of the great stadium and vibes of June/July/Aug baseball but maaaaannnn.

Ichiros BP without fans was something I always wanted to witness back then as some of the players would talk about him displaying consistent power with several hrs.

Not quite what you're looking for, but In early May 2019, my company had an event at Cheney Stadium during the day (non-game day). Ichiro was on the coaching staff and was there with a handful of other players. We're doing our thing and someone notices Ichiro is shagging fly balls. We're kind of casually watching, and eventually he walks over to home plate and, swear on my life, just starts parking balls left and right into the stands. We were way off to the side, so he wasn't hitting them to us, but he put on a damn show that afternoon. Totally random.

I've been on Internet forums at least since his rookie season, and I remember when the discourse about Ichiro was that he only hit singles and wasn't an effective offensive player compared to players who hit for power, and wouldn't amount to anything. He also got dinged for not stealing ENOUGH bases, even though he led the league his rookie year. Same with walks. It was, like, "yeah, he wants to put the ball in play". Also, "you mean the guy who just set the single season hits record and gets on base more than anyone in the league who isn't juicing? THAT guy isn't valuable???" Man, the debate over a Japanese position player was insane. He was the anti-roided out ball player, and people couldn't handle a foreigner completely changing the dynamic of the game when he played.

Forget the Rookie/MVP season...the 2004 single season hit record season was insane. Dude was racking up 4 and 5-hit games like MJ was dropping 40 on everyone in '87. Didn't translate to anything in the playoffs, but unstoppable.

A few friends and I attended the game when he broke the hit record. One of my most memorable M's memories. It was great to see the former hit records' family in the stands too.
