@GregJohnsMLB
That was Rodney's first blown save since last July 20, though obviously his second straight bad outing. M's fall to 3-5 with tough loss.

6 runs in two innings

two very un-Mariner like wins followed by two very Mariner like losses...

shades of Wilhelmsen & League meltdowns

I gotta look at some more of Kuma's stuff but these zone numbers do indicate a downtrend in overall production. he is getting up there in age, so it just may be your typical decrease in stuff/ability.

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=13048&position=P

from his MLB debut to today:

zone%
50.6%
51.4%
47.4%
41.2%

zone contact%
89.6%
88.3%
90.3%
91.7%

outside of the zone contact%
61.2%
62.1%
68.4%
72.5%

left on base%
81.9%
81.9%
74.1%
65.2%

for reference, LOB% of 80 or above is great, 75 is above average, 65 or worse is pretty lousy.

obviously this year's numbers is a very limited sample size, but it's worth following to see if he bucks the trend and gets back on track, or this is who he is now.

Thanks for this post. I think unfortunately he's just aging rapidly and clearly isn't the same pitcher from 2 seasons ago, let alone last year. He's hanging way too many meat pitches and can't even get to the 7th or 8th anymore. Too many pitches up in the zone for a sinker/splitter guy.

it's tough when guys come over as late in their careers as he did. had two great seasons but with him getting up their in age, that might have been his peak. hopefully he can just be solid enough and keep the ball down and hit his spots.

I'm seriously baffled by how bad this pitching has been so far. The M's offense is going to have to put 7-8 runs a game just to have a chance at this rate.

Rickie Weeks with what might be the worst throw home in baseball history, but let's be real Tai is putting these fastballs right down the pike
