Extremely inconsistent. Ichiro looks awful this season. And the middle is just not enough right now in the lineup.

UPDATE: Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times writes Friday that Figgins could be dropped to No. 9 in the order this weekend against the Yankees with Brendan Ryan the best candidate to take over in the No. 2 hole.
--
The Seattle Mariners have won six straight games and sit just 1 1/2 games back of first place Texas in the American League West. The M's still lack offense and are being carried by their starting rotation, and one of the black holes at the plate is third base Chone Figgins.
Figgins is hitting .211 on the season and just .208 in May, the worst among current Mariners regulars. But as Geoff Baker writes Tuesday, the club's options at third and with the veteran are limited.
Figgins is untradeable due to his poor play and hefty contract, and the organization is without a clear replacement, and benching a player owed $27 million through 2013 just isn't happening. As Baker suggests, however, moving Figgins from the No. 2 spot in the lineup could help the offense a little bit, and using Adam Kennedy at third some once prospect Dustin Ackley arrives -- likely in June -- could give the offense a boost, too.
I've heard a lot of talk that with Ryan's hot bat they should move him up to #2. I like moving Figgins to 9, but not Ryan to the 2 spot. He hasn't proved in his career that he can be a 2 spot hitter. This is just a hot streak. I like the idea of moving Guti to #2.
It is a question of when and not if the Mariners promote second base phenom Dustin Ackley.
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com said earlier this week that the promotion "should happen soon," with the Mariners replacing him at Triple-A with his former teammate at North Carolina, Kyle Seager.
Until now, the Mariners, who could use an offensive boost, have been splitting the second base duties between Jack Wilson and Adam Kennedy.
Seager, currently at Double-A Jackson, could end up being stuck behind Ackley in the Seattle system. In his SweetSpot blog, ESPN.com's David Schoenfield suggests Seager would fit nicely in a trade that would bring Carlos Beltran to Seattle.
This is the first I've ever heard about the M's being interested in Beltran this year. He would be a very nice addition to this lineup.
I don't know much about this Seager guy. Is he centerpiece material for an aging, yet productive vet, or would he have to be packaged with a few others?

I like that, or have Guti at the 3 and Smoak back to hitting cleanup
I want to keep Ryan where he is, he's hitting well...leave him there...we moved Smoak from where he was comfortable and he hasnt been hitting the same...although we have been winning

Yeah I dont know much about him either, I saw this last week
The Mets should trade Carlos Beltran and $5 million to the Mariners for 2B Kyle Seager.
Considering genius Fred Wilpon just torpeded Beltran's value by suggesting he's not close to the player he used to be, the Mets can't expect a top prospect in return for their right fielder, a free agent after the season. Plus, his $18.5 million contract is a problem for most teams. The Mariners' current hot streak (granted, it's come against the punchless Twins and Padres) suddenly put them in the thick of the AL West race despite their offensive struggles. Designated hitter Jack Cust just hit his first home run and Carlos Peguero and Mike Wilson are hardly the short-term (or long-term) solutions in left field. Beltran could play left and DH, and Seattle has the ability to pick up some additional payroll. (Beltran would have to waive his no-trade clause.)
Seager was a teammate of Dustin Ackley's at North Carolina, but with Ackley set as Seattle's second baseman of the future, he doesn't have a spot. After hitting .345 with 40 doubles and 14 home runs in the California League, he's proving himself in the tough transition to Double-A, hitting .302/.371/.477. He has a nice line-drive stroke, although there are some doubts about his range. Then again, this is a team playing Daniel Murphy at second base.
I'd do it if it's possible
Edit: L-Rod playing 3rd in the 2-hole tonight
