The Korean news has been talking about this 24/7 since the ferry sank 2 days ago and this seems to be all over the news around the world currently. Really sad to see all these high school students currently still missing after the ferry sank and I just can't imagine what these parents must be going through.
Some cliffnotes on what occurred:
- Ferry left from port of Incheon near Seoul to Jeju Island.
- 450+ passengers with more than 300 being students from a high school going on a field trip.
- Ferry hit something and began to sink and most people were told to stay put as trying to move would be more dangerous.
- Those who decided to go against the orders managed to escape and be rescued as most people were stuck on the ferry as it sank.
- A little less than 200 people have been rescued with around 30 confirmed dead and the rest still not accounted for.
- Captain was the first to escape and is currently in custody.
This whole incident has the nation in uproar right now as the media is portraying it as the government trying to do everything they can to try to rescue those still in the ferry. No one knows if they are still alive or if there are air pockets but the parents are saying that what is being shown through the news is not true at all and not much is being done at all.
Text messages were sent from students to their parents saying please help and that they can't escape because the ferry is tilted too much.
I've been following this all day for the past 2 days and I just can't imagine what the families must be going through. I'm sure a lot of them are holding onto that last hope that their children are still alive in the ferry.
All this has made me realize how important it is to really appreciate our lives day by day and another thing I have realized is some of the flaws/negative things about the korean governments. Elections are coming up soon and some candidates running have come to the site just to show their face and parents are outraged at what is going on. I hope for a miracle that those still not accounted for somehow make it out alive. Just so sad seeing this all unfold.
