The Korean news has been talking about this 24/7 since the ferry sank 2 days ago and this seems to be all over the news around the world currently. Really sad to see all these high school students currently still missing after the ferry sank and I just can't imagine what these parents must be going through.

Some cliffnotes on what occurred:

- Ferry left from port of Incheon near Seoul to Jeju Island.
- 450+ passengers with more than 300 being students from a high school going on a field trip.
- Ferry hit something and began to sink and most people were told to stay put as trying to move would be more dangerous.
- Those who decided to go against the orders managed to escape and be rescued as most people were stuck on the ferry as it sank.
- A little less than 200 people have been rescued with around 30 confirmed dead and the rest still not accounted for.
- Captain was the first to escape and is currently in custody.

This whole incident has the nation in uproar right now as the media is portraying it as the government trying to do everything they can to try to rescue those still in the ferry. No one knows if they are still alive or if there are air pockets but the parents are saying that what is being shown through the news is not true at all and not much is being done at all.

Text messages were sent from students to their parents saying please help and that they can't escape because the ferry is tilted too much.

I've been following this all day for the past 2 days and I just can't imagine what the families must be going through. I'm sure a lot of them are holding onto that last hope that their children are still alive in the ferry.

All this has made me realize how important it is to really appreciate our lives day by day and another thing I have realized is some of the flaws/negative things about the korean governments. Elections are coming up soon and some candidates running have come to the site just to show their face and parents are outraged at what is going on. I hope for a miracle that those still not accounted for somehow make it out alive. Just so sad seeing this all unfold.

Really is sad.

Can't believe they tell people to stay put and the captain is the first one to leave. He knew what was up and that those "orders" were BS.

Sad story. I'm not Korean, but I felt like I got to know the country a lil bit through K-dramas. Been wanting to visit the country for several years now and Jeju Island was one of the places I wanted to check out. Praying that they find more survivors.

^ Yeah it really is a sad story. News just popped up that the Vice Principal of the school who survived and was rescued off the Ferry just committed suicide and was found hanging from a tree. This really is getting worse and worse and still no rescue being done on the ship.

On another note, yeah Jeju island is absolutely beautiful. Awesome place to visit if you get a chance.

I wonder if that was a case of survivors remorse/guilt?

So the 'rescue' attempts are all baloney?

:{ At the captain, what a bum

Thought he was supposed to stay with the ship, and ensure all passengers get off safely :{. The first though, really? That is very sad.

I mean they are there but the effort really isn't there from what the parents are saying. It's already been almost 3 days and not much has been done. More words than actions which is what is frustrating the parents.

how far is the commute? they don't have any boats close to the ferry that could have rescued the ferry? 8o

There were some fishermen etc near the ferry that assisted right away but now that the ferry has been completely submerged, they need divers to go in and rescue and I guess there really isn't much being done which is why the parents are going insane.

Ayoo, this is really unbelievable news. Safety of passengers should be the first and most important thing. SMH.

Damn
Just like that bus with high school students that collided with the FedEx truck up in northern Cal.
You never know when its you or your family member's time. Have to appreciate every day 100.

from what i'm reading...navy and special forces were on the scene ASAP.

Divers are steady in the water but a submerged ship + ocean currents = dangerous...

if you know korean mentality, you know the personnel are beasting all opportunities

why would you tell people to stay put as the ship is capsizing? i can't imagine what those folks, still alive, are going through under the surface of that cold water. my thoughts are with them and their families.

I read about this earlier in the week. Kind of thought everything was over. But there are saying there two air pops lift on the boat.

Yeah this is what the parents are so upset about and screaming and yelling at the reporters for because what we are hearing and seeing on the news is the same clips over and over when the ship immediately sank but not much has been done in the past 2 days when they keep promising to do different things. There are videos circulating all over facebook from the parents saying please share as much as possible as what you see on the media is not true at all. It's sad to see but theres videos of parents getting so angry and cussing reporters out to stop lying while they are reporting live and a lot of stations are getting blasted by korean citizens for their misinformation.

1930KST: Body toll has risen to 32 people the scope of the operation is slowly transitioning into recovery, although rescue is still its main aim currently.

1910KST: Gas leak in the ship has become a serious problem

Being Korean, what pissed me off were the politicians who just showed up for the cameras and did nothing than just pose and give fake condolences.

Captain = Scumbag Steve.

You can't tell folks to stay put and then dip out at the first opportunity. Hope he's held liable for all the deaths.

On another note, if the ship I'm on is capsizing, I'd have a hard time staying put. But then again, most the passengers were kids so they were just following the orders of the adults they put their trust in. Damn shame.

And did I read that only ONE lifeboat was used? ONE??????!!!!!!!!

All I know is that I would had been off that boat, might of fact i would had made me a quick boat befoe i got off

definitely hoping they find some survivors. The whole country has been all about this incident 24/7 and most shows on television have been cancelled to cover this story. Can't imagine how sad and tiring this must be for those parents.
