Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

I thought a lot of the flips and samples were rudimentary. Really basic. The production overall was uninspiring.

He’s always done a great job pushing himself lyrically. His pen stands up to anyone.

But experimenting with his sound is something hes never cared about. And it’s the most disappointing part of his career, and the most disappointing part of this project.

That's why I said it's some **** I pass on YouTube

J Cole type beat

Generic sample flips

I fully went trough the album again. Cole really doesn’t have much to say

State of the game raps
Vague don’t test me beef raps
I can be the best raps

Very surface level **** like he never really grew up with anything important to rap about

None of it is interesting either. Then the amateur beats and terrible singing. This **** gets worse the more I listen to it.

It's like he tried to do his version of Mr Morale, but still doesn't want to give much of himself and is still surface level

It seems like a check off, him doing a double album because Big, Pac, Jay...

That's why it should have been more like DMX, one album in February and another in November/December

This is a wild take considering rap music as genre has some of the most shallow, uninspiring and minstrel show type vibes over the last 20 years. If these rappers didn't didn't have dope , guns and gangs to lean on they'd be unemployed.

But when these same rappers get hit with the RICO , "it was only entertainment" "my client is not in a gang your honor" "he's just using his freedom of speech to express what's going on in his community" foh!!!

Take away YB’s cult following and you’ll realize he only has a handful of hits and most were from early on when he started. Sure he has a gazillion songs but few bangers.

This is very true. This dude has gotten so much worse as he’s aged. It’s ridiculous.

He don’t even seem like a real artist anymore it’s odd, because his music that was really connecting that people knew and felt organic was his **** from 2016-2019. The songs didn’t chart crazy, but they did numbers and people knew them. He had some bangers for real, for real. No Smoke, Outside Today, Make no sense, GG.

Now he really got a cult following, and just drops whatever, and the cult eats it up. Outside of that, nobody is REALLT bumping it. But he got a hold on a segment for sure tho. And they pushed the button on his marketing budget.

Kodak would actually be a better matchup. And he’d smoke Youngboy in a versus.

You tripping. 15 for 15. Yak got that easily. Look up his discography. It’s kinda crazy.

Idk if YB got a Super Gremlin, No Flockin, Tunnel Vision, ZeeZee, Roll in Peace. Those were huge.
Yak is far more mainstream than YB so on a technicality he might win off that alone in a Verzus, but if we take the popularity away, YB is not getting smoked track for track.

You’re right. I’m not talking about them though. I put Cole in an upper echelon of rappers and only referring to him in that context. I’m not even comparing him to any lowly rappers.

There is a reason for that :lol. Yak has made better music for a longer time. He is just more of a lunatic than YB, and doesn’t have the current cult following that YB has. But on a track for track basis…I think Yak got it convincingly
