Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

It's cause when the average (I guess, casual) listener hears the term "lyrical", they think of people rhyming the dictionary, or doing what Eminem has been doing for awhile, just packing as many syllables as you can into a sentence.

Exactly. Canibus comes to mind.

While not in the same circle of talent as lupe Kendrick is still lyrical. People for some reason think lyricism comes one way when there are several ways you can be lyrical.

i think 95% of the world calls Kendrick a lyricist, Lupe just has extremely high standards & doesn't think he's one of the best ever which a lot of people are starting tp put him at.

A lot of people that tell you Kendrick is lyrical couldn’t even tell you a Kendrick song/verse

That’s not to discredit Kendrick, but I been saying for a while now, Kendrick is a safety net artist that just gets people a cool pass to mention. They ain’t studying or taking the music in

I can think of a few but they're memorable because of creativity not for complexity

I never really understood the logic behind it requiring some special level of attention to "break down complex lyrics". Maybe there's something to prodding lyrics to catch things you may have missed on the first couple listens...but the idea that one has to devote some advanced level of attention with Lupe that they don't have to do on a Quavo song doesn't make any sense to me. It also suggests that with "non-lyrical" music...that they can practically get away with saying anything because their lyrics arent the "reason" you're listening in the first place

Thought this was a Wavy or Waves post

You have to listen to the album backwards to understand what they're taking about

I can just tell you don't like him. Anybody who says they liked tpab will tell you that they studied tpab like crazy because it was a lot to take in.

Where do ya'll get it from that people don't listen to Kendrick like that?

The people at his shows know every word to every song he performs. You can't be looked as a great rapper with classic albums and people don't listen to you.

  • Ed Sheeran.
  • Drake.
  • The Weeknd.
  • Kendrick Lamar.
  • The Chainsmokers.
These are spotify's most streamed artist. Kendrick is the only none pop act in there. He got every box checked. Great rapper. Classic albums. Sales. He just performed Element at the National championship and that crowd knew every word and that ain't even a single. :lol

Nah your whole perspective is off. People analyzed that album to death. And Kendrick is not rappity rap by any means.

That’s your opinion, cool. Majority of the people I encounter call Kendrick the GOAT yet can’t tell me 4 bars from any album cut...that white people/eminem effect...music junkies dissect these albums, the general public? Nah

What's this supposed to prove? Kendricks albums are straight hip hop. Please tell me you ain't trippin like that.

Dog you know Kendrick tries to dabble into that pop world, he’s not directly doing pop songs on his albums but he’s featuring with some of the biggest straight pop stars out there. And it ain’t damn sure for money

I mean it is for $. :lol

We know rappers and pop stars work together to try to exchange each other's fan bases. Nothing wrong with that but he ain't making multiple pop singalong records on his albums. From that list he's the only one that's straight rapping.

I'm definitely Joe Budden-ing right now, but that lil ***** don't need all that money
