Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Does Pharrell even still rap? I'm all for it if he brings skateboard P out of retirement but his image is so cleaned up I'm not sure he would. N.E.R.D just released an album so Chad is still their

only hour long version on youtube aint nobody got time for no split tracks.

And Tetsuo & Youth is def a classic album. It just isnt celebrated as such because I think Lupe lost a lot of casual fans in the 2010's. But most the fans who still stuck around to mess with Lu would agree that T&Y is a classic.
Fair to say.

I’ve never heard a wack Lupe track. Dude’s skill with words is undeniable. That being said, the only album of his that I’ve listened to in its entirety is Food and Liquor (which is a dope *** double entendre given to you from the album title alone).

I could never delve too deep into his albums. I don’t like to study music too deeply, but I can respect those who do. I’m one of those people who will listen to a track and find the meaning later on down the line when not listening, and give the artist kudos for having successfully delivered some thought provoking material.

This is In My Mind Prequel stuff, he hasn't rapped like this in years. The Gangsta Grillz is also on Datpiff but its missing Lavish featuring Twitsa. Last time I heard P rap was

This was more than 6 years ago, also shorty next to him rapping his verse :pimp:

I always thought prime Lupe was better than K. Dot. But I'm surprised to hear so many people agree.
.

I think everyone knows Lupe is a rapper than Kendrick. Whose music and albums you like better is a different topic but Lupe definitely has more skill.

F&L2 was a great album.
Lasers was cool, half was great and the other half was too commercial.
I liked T&Y but never wanted to hear it again.
I downloaded Drogas but never played it.

What would be you guys’ guesses as to why there seems to be a disconnect with Lupe as an artist and how he’s received?

I haven’t seen anyone in this thread dispute that he’s one of the greatest lyricists to ever get on a mic. But I haven’t heard his name mentioned in the GOAT conversation until about two weeks ago when they discussed him on Joe’s podcast.

label politics ruined his career

Because a lot of times he's a rapping enigma that probably wouldn't appeal to the vast majority.

Please listen to that Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) interview I posted pages back. There's a whole side of **** that goes on behind the scenes that governs how an artist maneuvers throughout the industry. You can be the most talented individual known to man...but when you enter that game...none of that matters.

The machine rules all. It can make and break you. It can knock Kendrick and Drake off their pivot tomorrow if it wanted to.

The disconnect came after the cool. He was riding high off of 2 critically acclaimed albums, features, mixtapes etc. ***** even had his own clothing line bout to pop (fall of Rome) and was one of the leading cats for streetwear and ****. Him and Wayne were seen as the ones that were going to “take the next step” in 07. Even had the Reebok deal.

Then Label politics happened....and he succumbed to the pressures and didn’t stay true...while acting like he was forced to put out those pop records that didn’t click. He took way too long too. Then that **** drove him to be bitter, resentful and pretentious.

Wavy gotta throw in Wayne name no matter what. SMH, Wayne trash and will always be trash. Wayne was never and will never be on Lupe level

Lupe had label problems. He didn't want to do the commercial route and when he did, he was successful. Lasers did well and I think that was his last time going commercial. Think he filled his contract or finally got dropped and then he started making his music but too much time had passed.

I think the music business as a whole just soured his personal outlook and that in turn affected his music. Think up till the release of Lasers dude was always happy, even when he rapped about serious **** his voice rarely raised on those songs. He literally stopped being Cool, as in he started to get pissed off alot more publicly after the reception of Lasers (Which is funny cause it sold alot). Add to the fact that fans started to call him a sell out and Food and Liquor 2 didn't get alot of push, even though its what he thought the fans were asking for, then the mainstream's decreased interest in complex lyricism (which he called on Dumb it Down) may have just been too much for him.

I dont know him personally but I do follow him on twitter and he just seems cynical as hell now a days. Testuo & Youth was a step in the right direction though and for the first time in a while I saw people talking about him in a positive light. The industry is rough

Well music is a art form and at the same time it's a business. If you're a mainstream artist, do you chase creative control or marketability of sales?

It's not like Lasers did vastly better sales wise than F&L and the Cool.

I think people started to look at him as bitter & musically he stopped trying to make music for the casuals. Lasers really hurt his perception as an artist for a minute and i don't think he's ever recovered to the mainstream atleast.

Also as stated earlier, a lot of the music he was making had a lot of depth & just wasn't as entertaining as before. Lupe was already looked at as extra lyrical when he dropped, So you take into account a lot of casual listeners palette now, they simply don't wanna hear that.

For whatever reason if your a rapper who makes "conscious rap" or is constantly speaking against popular opinion people start to look at you as corny. And that's basically what happened to Lupe.

Well said. Especially the bolded parts.
