Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

I'm not a big Lupe fan but he probably has the skills to be the best rapper ever. The most talented lyricist. With that said, I don't listen to a lot of his music. It's just too much at times.

Kendrick is dope and I'm a fan but he's a little overrated lyrically just because of the era today. The mainstream Rap is so ****in trash that it makes Kendrick seem so much better than he is lyrically.

Prime Lupe had song making ability though. Guy could do it all :{

Both thof Cool’s are better concept albums than Kendrick’s joints.

MyCoolYoung History :hat

They completely missed the boat not dropping a visual for this joint. Gemstones has potential....but went the religious route.

this has always been my biggest issue with Lupe, He has The Rap ability & the song making ability to really be a GOAT. But he's a true artist in every sense of the word & he doesn't really give a **** about perception or what his fans "want" he releases what he likes

And just that quick, we go from talking about the talented and best of the last 10 years to the worst of the last 10 years. Thanks Wavy

I'm a huge Kendrick fan but Lupe is right Kendricks lyricism isn't on par with cats like him, Hov, Royce, 3K in terms of metaphors and entendres. However he's elite at story telling, at painting a picture in rhymes, at provoking thought & feelings while spitting.

Lupe wasn't wrong for saying that at all, but i do think he may have a lil problem with Kendrick because Kendrick is what Lupe was on path to be. Lupe's first two projects were extremely lyrical but still able to draw in casual listeners w/o having to bend to mainstream media. Then between label disputes & toying around artistically the music just seemed to lose that vibe.

Example Tetsou & Youth is a phenomenal album, but you literally gotta study that **** to get a lot of the messages & bars. it's a legit project to unveil the artistry. As opposed to Damn which also has A lot of deeper meanings & concepts, but even at face value fans can just enjoy the music. Over time Lupe just hasn't been interested in that aspect.

I'm not even sure its that deep honestly, Lupe is a borderline Black Thought level lyricist and Jay-Z at one point was his mentor. Dude's a Aesop Rock fan, he probably feels most of the mainstream artist are a bit overrated lyrically (the ones who try anyway) when you listen to **** like that on the regular (like most underground fans period).

The guy who made these clearly know what the hell he's talking about

I'd rather listen to Kendrick than Lupe

I feel the same way about Lupe that I feel about Cole.

The goal of music is to entertain. If you aren't entertaining me, I don't really have a desire to listen to your album multiple times.

not necessarily

entertainment as an explicit goal of music only comes when money gets involved

art can have any purpose

completely forgot about SLR

child rebel soldiers would still be appreciated and it would probably be the best move for all 3 individuals involved right now

Ye getting too old to be doing the overdone trap records he’s relied on since WTT

Pharrell just put out that mid album full of punch your keybord fl studio beats

lupe is on twitter being salty

they could really put out a classic 10 years after the fact...is chad around?

imagine them all just going crazy over a ye x neptunes beat

I disagree with the idea that any medium of Art has a purpose or goal other than to just exist. It’s up to the artist to decide what they wanna do with it.

As far as Lupe, T&Y has some dense tracks like Mural but that’s not the whole album, its just a part of the overall piece. Majority of the songs DO have double and deeper meanings tho. I think he did a good job on most of those tracks to kinda leave it up to the listener to dive into those if they want.

Bruh got a track on there w him, Trouble, Trae Tha Truth, Billy Blue and Buku all rapping street **** As a standalone you take the track at face value but in the context of the whole piece all that street **** takes on another, deeper, meaning.

Edit: I will say tho, right now Kendrick is on a elite level as far as giving _’s “veggies and desserts” simultaneously. DNA, Humble and Element are tracks that a lot of people can vibe to but he still gives enough on those to where his core isn't disappointed. That's what separates dude likes Jay from everyone else.

Lupe one of them dudes that I respect him as a rapper but his music was always boring to me. Now it seem he let the industry drive him crazy. He's a smart dumb _.

Does Pharrell even still rap? I'm all for it if he brings skateboard P out of retirement but his image is so cleaned up I'm not sure he would. N.E.R.D just released an album so Chad is still their

Lupe appreciation :nthat:

I remember pulling a few joints with that “Sunshine” song
The remix with Amanda Diva :nthat:

Prime Lupe was cold smh. I also remember some songs between 06-08 thinking it was Lupe when it was actually Willie The Kid :lol

From what I remember the songs leading up to Lasers were fire, even liked The Show Goes On, but the album and negative press on it after soured me from a purchase I think lol.

One of my favorite songs from that time:

I always thought prime Lupe was better than K. Dot. But I'm surprised to hear so many people agree.

And Tetsuo & Youth is def a classic album. It just isnt celebrated as such because I think Lupe lost a lot of casual fans in the 2010's. But most the fans who still stuck around to mess with Lu would agree that T&Y is a classic.

The fact that this ***** was at the CF championship performing DNA is Ill. If you really take into account what he's saying on that record

Also Dude got on the Grammy's & performed this, Dude doesn't get the credit he deserves as a Complete Artist. Dude's visuals & performances are the best in rap right now
