Lauryn was the TOP FEMALE ARTIST IN THE GAME. She sold using lyrics, nothing overly sexual, positive messages etc.
When she disappeared,with her self-imposed exile, all that was left Lil Kim/Foxy Brown etc. They had ill lyrics but they used sex as the primary to sell (image and content wise).
females started to think, ok if I want to be a rapper and make money I have to be overtly sexual and vulgar. Thus we have the Trina's and more recently, the Nicki Minaj's.
