Pippen Says LeBron is "Best Player Ever"

Championships do matter, the game is 5 on 5. If you are a great player you win, period, no ifs ands or buts about it. To paraphrase what was said on PTI this week, "It's not football with 22 players out there, it is a team of 5."
Saying a player needs rings to be in the discussion just makes you look dumb. If somebody asked you if Chris Paul is a better point guard than Derek Fisher, would you say Chris Paul is not even in the discussion? If Chris Bosh gets a ring this year, is he automatically better than Karl Malone? Is Karl Malone not even in the discussion?
LeBron has already easily surpassed Kobe. He's nowhere near MJ, but Kobe is the one who is not even in the discussion. Kobe is a lesser player who has been a part of great teams. Both Luke Walton and Sasha Vujacic have 2 rings. Is LeBron "out of the discussion" with them?

Don't kid yourself, LeBron IS going to get the rings, but that's not what makes him a great player. That is a result of being a member of a great team.

QFT Kobe couldn't even beat my suns in the first round a handful of years back why you ask? Because he had nobody around him!! You cannot argue the fact that there is a direct correlation between Gasol's arrival and the rejuvenation of the Lakers in the playoffs.

"No player without rings can enter the discussion"

...because?

I say that MJ is the best ever. And it's not because of any of the rings he won with the Chicago Bulls.

There really isn't much of a discussion. You can be good, great, one of the greatest ever. However you cannot be THE GREATEST PLAYER EVER without a ring. Bottom line. Bump this thread if Lebron wins the Finals and we can continue the discussion.

And you still haven't given a reason for this thinking that hasn't been countered in this thread. It's "You gotta win a ring to be the best ever, because, uh, well...you gotta win a ring! There! Circular logic ftw!"

Can you imagine a coach being considered the greatest ever without a ring? While we are at it, Mike Brown is better than Phil Jackson because Mike Brown did more with lesser players. Since rings don't matter to you guys

To say that:

- Kobe is not in the discussion of the greatest of all time
- Kobe being clutch is a "myth"
- That Lebron is better than Kobe (in his prime) at mostly every aspect of the game
- That Kobe rode coattails to win all 5 of his rings

is just crazy. I mean, I'm a Kobe stan, but I will admit that Lebron James is one of the greatest. But everything you're saying is rediculous.

1. Of corse Kobe is not in the discussion for greatest of all time. The only 3 players in that discussion are MJ, Kareem & Wilt.

2. Kobe being clutch IS a myth. He misses 68% of his clutch shots. That's an undeniable fact. If you consider shooting that poorly to still be clutch, that's your choice.

3. LeBron IS better than prime Kobe in most aspects of the game. If you take Kobe's best season, Lebron has multiple seasons where he's better in scoring (PPG, FG%), assists, rebounding, steals, blocks, etc... The only things Kobe has the edge on is 3P% and FT%. These are the facts.

4. OK. That statement could be debatable depending on how you look at it. The first 3peat is not debatable. Shaq is the overwhelming reason why that Laker team won those 3 championships. Shaq was the star on that team and Kobe was a star role player. He was Pippen. A Good player and an all star who made his contribution, but clearly the other guy was the main reason they won.

For Kobe's last 2 championships he was the leader of the team. No question about it. Anyone who tries to argue that is a fool. You would HAVE to agree though that Gasol was equally responsible for them winning those 2 championships and in some cases, even more so. Gasol really should have got that 2010 finals MVP, but Kobe was the leader so you could make a case.

Don't get it twisted though, Lebron is not in the discussion either. He has no case whatsoever to be considered the GOAT. The difference though is that he's in roughly the middle of his career. He's just starting to build his legacy. He has all the tools and potential to be that caliber of player. He probably won't, but it's within reason. I think at the end of his career he might be a top 5 player.

Kobe is at the last years of his career. He's pretty much laid down his legacy and we know he's not the best ever. You can make a case as a top 10 player though. You just can't put him up there with MJ, Kareem & Wilt. You would have to put him past Bill Russell, Bird, Magic, Shaq, Etc.... I can't see that.
