Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I think ska and I have called ourselves M. Night apologists in the past. He is a third good writer, a third good director and a third delusional OCD nut or something that disallows everything to come together for a full movie.
Yes.

There aren't many big name black actors out there, so I've really tried with the kid.

But I just...I can't stand him. His faces, his acting, his persona, all of it.

M. Night's an afterthought in the reasons not to. :lol

Oh, and Will...I don't think I'll ever look forward to another Will Smith movie again...that's like keeping your hopes up in Cleveland, June 2010.

I never think about it unless someone brings it up, but District 9 is probably one of the (top-15/20?) best films of the past five years.
That's a movie I don't want to watch again, because I know I won't like it as much as I did the first time.
laugh.gif

And I'd probably find a bunch of ehhhh plot stuff to nitpick at. But it was one of the best moviegoing experiences. Packed house, no one got up or spoke for the last half hr. Pure silence when the fighting started. You could feel everyone on the edge of their seats. So rare.
The sociological awareness of this movie...

This is NO alien movie. I mean, it is, but it's like saying The Happening is a movie about 'scary air.'

Nah, man.

LOVE District 9.

It stars Will Smith and Will Smith's spawn. I can't, in good conscience, directly pay for that.

Good. Glad I'm not the only one. Its gotten to the point that Will Smith (or any of his kids) being in a movie is reason enough for me not to see it, unless I hear really incredible things about it from someone whose opinion I trust.

It can have you imagining the better thing it maybe could've been, but don't call it a good film, because of that.
I didn't call it a good film, though. Said I liked it, and now I'm simply contending that there was a message to Happening... and most likely Lady and Unbreakable and Village... that went RIGHT over the heads of most. Actually, I'm not even 'contending' that, because it has been made plainly obvious in here.

Okay...I get that. And I guess, I can understand how you could see that metaphor for storytelling in Lady in the Water as something....interesting?

And I'll leave it at that. Almost went off on Lady, almost talked myself into watching it again. Not about to do either. :lol :{

Well dammit all to hell.

I really like i,Robot and Hancock and still like Independence Day and Bad Boys.

*shrugs*

*walks out*

Man, forget y'all...

Now... yes, when I heard 'After Earth' and 'Will Smith', I thought "Oh, man... why Will?" Then when I heard 'M.Night', I thought 'Well damn. Still Will?'

Suffice it to say I definitely wish it were someone different, but... I mean... he ain't... Zack Galinafawhatever.

^^^Bad Boys was/is great and I actually like the MIB movies too. But most of those were made before I started disliking Will Smith, e.g. when he started putting his kids in movies. Of his newer movies, the only one I saw and liked was I Am Legend.

No Pursuit of Happyness?

I heard Seven Pounds was decent, never got around to watching it.
Needs a sequel
eh im not so sure, im fine with it, and how it ended to be honest.

I'm still a few episodes away from finishing season 5 of 24.....

I am anticipating the last episode to be one of the most satisfying season finales ever.

It's not hate or anything Ska. :lol Will is childhood. Too many cable classic came from dude.

It's just...everyone who came up around when Will did, had talent like him and did the kinda movies he did...evolved. They branched out. They all grew up and did more. He, for the most part, just won't. Not really. He'll dip his toe in the pool, but most of the grown up stuff is superficial or off the mark. Wheels spinnin.

It's just kinda like...that's it?

It feels like he skipped his prime, when all of the most interesting, challenging films were supposed to happen, and he's in already that safe, thrown on the old charm, 'remember the good times' Harrison Ford/Bruce Willis phase of his career.

I've missed plenty of messages before, I'm sure of it, but that don't matter to me. Just because the Happening has a message about taking care of the Earth or it will take care of us, does not in fact make the movie viewable, or likable just cuz.
Same thing with a Tarantino movie not having a message, but being pure perfection for 2 hours, polar opposites, but having a message over having substance is not what I would be signing up for.

You can have a movie be smart, and deep, and make you think, but where does it say that having that message means making damn good actors look like scrubs off the street on their first day? Or tremendously poor dialogue like "I can hear the wind thru the phone" :{
Have a message, and want to send it, fine, I'm happy to listen, but don't destroy all other parts of the movie to do so.

District 9 however, was awesome. I don't think many around here complain about that movie. Unbreakable is tremendous, Sixth Sense was good, Signs was really good til the final 5 minutes or so. I was with M Night right up to that point, and then something happened. He ran out of ideas, lost his mind, is a body snatch victim with a stupid clone, I don't know, but his first 3 movies belong up there with anybody's first 3. The happening, and it's scary air message can go ----> thatta way.

Will has been discussed in here plenty, he and his agent sat down, and figured out what = money at the box office. The answer was sci-fi and Will went with it. ID4, MIB, IRobot, ILegend, Hancock, After Earth, etc etc. He did Ali, and 6 Degrees of Separation as his "serious work" did Pursuit because it was for his son (still tremendous tho) and things like Hitch cuz he got to be Will and make out with Eva Mendes, never a bad thing. Bad Boys was pre epiphany Will, and the sequel was built in money maker, audience, Bay, etc action flick. Everything Will does is for a simple reason, box office receipts. He has no interest in being interesting, or winning awards, any of that. He wants to be Will, and get paid. He's the opposite of Leo. Leo wants to do WORK.

Ok, ok... I'm completely with those last responses by you two, MrO and CP.

Too much to quote because I agree with all of it.

I was thinking... like I thought everyone was all anti-Will now, on some Tim Tebow vibe.
laugh.gif

Yeah, I forgot to mention the MIBs. Those are toooo clean, man.
smokin.gif

Pursuit? CLASSIC.

Legend? Robot? I'd high 5 him if I saw him.

Hancock? I mean... it was given to me, so I have it. Watched it a few times. Cute. Tries to have a couple messages, but never really... goes too far w/ either of them. Decent.
laugh.gif

But to hate him over his resume? I thought that's what we were doing, and I was like "I'm out."
laugh.gif

Damn, mentally defending M. Night and Will over the last few hours has made me REALLY 'opposite of anticipate' After Earth. A main character that needs to be defended being directed by a director that needs to be defended.

Like Paul Pierce being coached by Mike D. (I swear, if that happens by way of Mike staying with his current team...)

Bad Boys is a ******g classic

that movie will never get old.

Bad Boy 2 had its moments

Yeah it was easy to get The Happening and most other M. Night movies. Acting was terrible though and I can't say as far as intrigue it was written exceptionally. Since Unbreakable dude has not matched it. Just seemed way too focused on twists.
I can't really figure out why Maggie Gyllenhall is sexy, but she is. Watching Stranger Than Fiction on cable. Good movie.
:x

Here you go fam:

I'm in, all I need is a series premiere date.

I like her as a comic, so I've been watching the show... it's not bad. I haven't seen tonight's episode but so far it's worth a watch if you like her.

What's her standup stuff like? I really only saw her at the roasts so I kinda assumed she was younger Lampenelli light

Her special on Comedy Central was called "Mostly Sex Stuff" and that's an appropriate description.

From what I remember, mostly about sex, relationships, men/women, etc.
