OFFICIAL Ye fka "kanYe West" x G.O.O.D. Music Thread - ¥$ (AKA YE X TY DOLLA SIGN) - VULTURES 2 (NOW AVAILABLE sorta)

This.

Emphasis on the element of polarizing your audience. It's what keeps things fresh and interesting.

This is exactly what differentiates a good artist, like J. Cole, from an iconic artist like Kanye.

J. Cole has released a bunch of good albums. They are also a bunch of albums that are exactly what you would expect from him and are incredibly predictable. Pretty much everyone can agree J. Cole's stuff is listenable. Everyone. You are never going to hear a hip hop fan be absolutely disgusted with a J. Cole song, at the same time, no one will be surprised or shocked at what they hear.

Kanye? You are either going to love it, or hate it. And that's why he is the most polarizing, interesting, talked about, and influential person in hip hop. Whether it was vulnerable, honest backpack rap on College Dropout rap, to 808s and Heartbreak super emo level rap, to Yeezus - WTF punk rock rap, you never know what to expect from Kanye, except that people will definitely either love it or hate it with a passion, and that's exactly why he remains fresh and influent more than 10 years in the spotlight.

100% on the money. Especially the last paragraph.

Can we all agree that lyrically, Yeezus was underwhelming?

Sure. I literally couldn't care less about lyrics with Yeezy though. When I want lyricism I'm NOT checking for Kanye. What I am checking for when I listen to Kanye is **** that is innovative, new, and fresh which is exactly what Yeezus is. That **** bangs, end of story period.

Production was definitely dope. I liked the sound. Different from what most are doing, but dude just sounded uninspired compared to MBDTF.

It was trash lyrically and only half the beats were good. I'm sorry but I expect a rapper to actually put together good verses especially a dude who has classics in his catalog. If you telling me Kanye is just a "innovative" harmonizer now I'll take that. Kanye was never Nas or Jay with flows but his content was always great. Yeezus was lyrically lazy all-around.

And that's my problem with the record. I felt the same with Magna Carta as well. All production, lazy lyrics. The fact that it followed MBDTF probably made it a bit worse as well.
