Cowboy will be greatly missed. IMO he allowed Aldon to flourish and do it early in his career. No more Super Smith Bros :\

3rd and 17

one on one with one of the best left tackles in the game

dominated

cowboy was the real DPOY in 2011

Cowboy :(

Gonna miss those double stunts with the Smith Bros. That play vs Philly when he chased down Jason Avant (?) :eek

Cowboy's shoulder pad game always on fleek :lol

Cowboy will be missed. Hopefully the entire d-line steps it up this year with his absence.

Anyone see that Vernon put up a pic on IG about missing football, then Frank Gore replied saying "you dont love the game"

But then later said he was joking :lol

They have the best bromance. Like squirtle and bulbasaur back in the day.

Always calling him Frankie even though he hates it.

He definitely did help Aldon out a tremendous amount!!!!!....imo without Cowboy taking those double teams and stuntin' taking 2 men, Aldon wouldnt have as many sacks as he does

I wish I could say Tank will fill his void, but he wont. He could end up being a better pure pass rusher than Cowboy, but Justin Smith was the prototype for the 5-technique; any pass rushing he did was a bonus. Dude was so damn strong he could stack 2 offensive lineman single-handedly and dominate his gap assignment, which allowed his linebackers to flow freely. Truly one of a kind.

Tank and Aldon could form a very nice combination in the nickel. Tank might not be as strong and stout as Justin in the run game, but I think he is a better pure pass rusher. Armstead could be formidable in the base package against the run. Basically we split Justin's production between two players.

btw I am so pumped we're going back to zone running scheme. **** yes.

Kap and Los about to eat off that read option+zbs synergy.

Harbaugh coached an old-school, Big-Ten, 1970s offense. A power-running offense with sumo-style blocking. Grab the guy in front of you and push him back. Impose your will. That’s Harbaugh’s style.

None of that took place at Thursday’s OTA. During drills, five offensive linemen at a time would crouch into three-point stances. When Chris Foerster, the new offensive line coach, yelled, “Hut,” all five offensive linemen started sprinting to their right.

That’s zone blocking: outflank the defense and stretch them to create lanes for the running back. It’s a finesse style that requires fast offensive linemen, not powerful ones.

It’s the running game Mike Shanahan made famous. He used it when he coached the Denver Broncos and most recently when he coached the Washington ********. Foerster was Shanahan’s offensive line coach in Washington, and Foerster seems to be teaching Shanahan’s techniques to the 49ers.

One more little difference.

Tomsula is incorporating even more finesse into the offense. He’s bringing back the screen pass. The Niners almost never ran this play under Harbaugh, in practice or in games.

It was the first pass play the Niners ran Thursday afternoon. Colin Kaepernick threw a screen to Reggie Bush.

It’s a classic Bill Walsh play that should never have left the 49ers’ playbook. Good for Tumsula for bringing it back.
