I agree, Troy hasn't really done that well, but he's at least the same (if not better) than Alex. There's no upside in starting Alex, unless if Sing's thinking of tanking the season, which in that case...

most likely scenario, alex plays decent and the 49ers get a good win sunday which brings up the, "hey we still got a shot" talk again, followed by the 49ers getting smacked back to reality by san diego.
