For some reason, I get the feeling that most of the guys on here value camera bodies far more than the lenses. I can understand that most of the guys here arejust starting out but you should know that it's the lens that really makes the difference. If you look around you'll see some amazing photos taken withthe oldest of camera bodies. Shoot, my Rebel XT has pretty much been buried in my camera bag since I got my 40D but I took a couple of shots recently with myEF 50mm f/1.4 and was impressed by the sharpness and quality of the image it produced.
In short lenses > camera bodies. I'm a Canon user so I'm not sure how Nikon bodies are limited to certain lens mounts, but rather than consideringto buy a new body, consider getting a better lens.
Right now, I'm considering to go all prime. I've got the 85L II and am hunting for a 35L and a 50L to complete my prime 'trinity.'
