Washington Capitals forward
Alex Ovechkin was involved in a knee-on-knee collision in the first period of Monday night's game against the
Carolina Hurricanes and needed help from medical personnel to leave the ice.
Ovechkin, who has 18 goals and 11 assists, received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing Hurricanes defenseman
Tim Gleason at 12:05 of the opening period. Ovechkin was on the ice for several minutes before receiving help to the locker room.
"Of course, he's a great player and he's done a lot for this team," Caps forward
Nicklas Backstrom said of Ovechkin during the first intermission. "But we've got 20 other guys out there and hopefully we can do something good about it."
Gleason, who has 4 goals and 4 assists, was able to return.
