Tom Brady’s calls, not arm, set stage for huge win

Tom Brady’s activity before the snap against the Indianapolis Colts was, in many cases, every bit as valuable as his efforts when the ball was live.
So, it would be entirely unfair to look at his stat line of 13 completions on 25 attempts for 198 yards and no touchdowns and think the quarterback got the night off courtesy of his backfield’s 234 yards and six scores. Brady was instrumental to the ground success, to the point where any notion suggesting otherwise was considered offensive by his teammates.
“Tom did a lot,” said Julian Edelman, who was asked about Brady having an easy night at the office. “That’s very false. He puts us in the plays and he gets us right. A lot of people don’t understand that when you have a quarterback who can go out there and put you in the right play every time, good things are going to happen.”
Several Patriots admitted to installing a run-heavy game plan last week with the promise of heavy rain in the forecast, so LeGarrette Blount, Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen were prepared for the onslaught and followed through. The week-to-week chameleonic approach was king again, and Brady’s statistical shortage shouldn’t be viewed as a red flag heading into the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos.
If Brady needs to heave a half-century’s worth of passes in a shootout with Peyton Manning, as he did while completing 34 throws for 344 yards and three touchdowns in Week 12, there would be little concern against the Broncos’ 27th-ranked pass outfit and 22nd-ranked scoring defense.
As for Saturday’s 43-22 win in the divisional round, the majority of the runs went off as called by offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, but Brady always has veto power at the line. Before each snap, Brady shouted, “White 80,” seemingly to signify the play was a go.
Yet, there were plenty of instances when Brady adjusted, both out of the run and pass. Brady was in the shotgun with Vereen to his right on third-and-5 during their second series, and the quarterback yelled, “57 Rita,” before Vereen motioned to Brady’s left and took advantage of a mismatch in the flat to break open for a 13-yard reception. Seven plays later, on second-and-goal from the 2, Brady used a quick snap to keep the Colts off balance, and Nate Solder and Logan Mankins won their blocks so decisively that Blount scored without getting touched.
On a third-and-3 later in the quarter, Brady changed the blocking assignment by calling, “Bandit Alpha,” after Vereen motioned to his left. Vereen took the handoff 5 yards for the conversion through the B-gap between the guard and tackle (Bandit: B). “Alpha” signified a quick snap. Then, on third-and-3 later in the drive, Brady checked to a “Bandit” blocking assignment before Vereen’s 3-yard shotgun draw. Blount’s diving touchdown made it 21-7 on the next play.
In the second quarter, Brady changed the play by shouting, “Rita,” before Blount’s 8-yard run to the right side (Rita: right). Two plays later, Brady screamed, “Alert 52,” before Blount’s 4-yard run to the right. Solder pulled to lead the way and blocked Kelvin Sheppard, who is No. 52. It appeared clear Brady changed Solder’s assignment.
Late in the half, Brady made his longest check after identifying something he liked. Brady called, “White 80,” to set the offense before pausing and shouting, “Gold 34 Away, 52’s the Mike.” Ridley then gained 5 yards.
“I thought Tom did a good job as well in the running game of, I don’t know if I would say getting us into a good play, but certainly getting us out of a bad play,” coach Bill Belichick said. “There were two or three times when we had a look where we just were short a blocker.”
There were passing adjustments, too, with one particular example. On third-and-10 in the second quarter, Brady was in the shotgun with three receivers left and two right, and he yelled, “Linda,” to alter something to his left side (Linda: left), whether it was one route or the whole tree. James Develin, wide left, ran a fly pattern, and Michael Hoomanawanui ran a seam route. As a result, Edelman was left in single coverage without safety help in the slot, and he beat Vontae Davis on a crossing pattern for 13 yards.
Brady only completed 52 percent of his passes, but he was fairly sharp, including a 16-yard dart through a window of four Colts to Danny Amendola, a couple of big plays after a play-action pass to Edelman (27 yards) and Amendola (53), and an 8-yard bullet to Amendola on a third-and-3 out route.
Sure, Brady skipped a quick screen pass to Kenbrell Thompkins and misfired on two wheel routes to Vereen, including one after a “Rita” check.
But there’s no cause for concern if Brady gets into another passing party with Manning. That is, of course, if the Patriots tactician allows it to get that far.
i feel good about this Broncos game
Blount only played 4 snaps last time we went up against the Broncos , and if you remember it was already 17-0 before we even got a chance to string together a drive without turnovers . the Broncos defense can be slowed down and limited ! the Chargers in a lot of ways -- along with our first match up -- have laid out the blueprint with how to limit them
prez...i completely forgot that we turned the ball over 3 or 4 times to start that game
expect to start much better this time
agreed that we can learn from what the chargers did combined with what we did in the second half of our last game. both defensively and offensively.
