It's a great read (Russell vs. Wilt), but if I can remember correctly, he said that Wilt's high scoring/rebounding was due to the ridiculous nature of shot-jacking during that period of time in the NBA. The average PPG in the league was around 120 (I think). Also, Wilt went out with the purpose of winning the assist title...passing up easy shots and berating his teammates when they would miss off of his dimes. He was a man driven by statistics and didn't care about winning. There was no doubt that he was a beast, but he put statistics and individual accolades over his team.
Obviously, what I wrote is extremely paraphrased and doesn't capture what Simmons wrote too well, but the that particular chapter of the book is an excellent read.
