If you are looking it as a grown man, with responsibilities and real world knowledge, this would be a wise viable option.

The other options you might propose ...

Be together longer, know the person, see if you guys are financially stable, the commit to having a child. What if one of these don't work, is it going to stop you from having a child. What if everything works minus the relationship, then what?

There's no attestation when it comes to having a child. In this case, the risk are worth it. If they don't work out the child will be financially stable.
