What kind of wood do you usually use? Certain woods create deeper smoke rings, along wit temps and time imo.
Hard to get a smoke ring wit apple. Try a heavier smoke wood wit the same thin/blue type smoke.
Swap the hickory for some pecan, then try oak and gradually move up to mesquite.
You cant go wrong wit a oak/pecan mix tho.

I got some pecan recently. Will need to try that Oak x Pecan mix, never tried oak before.
Currently using pellets in a setup like this (not my pic)
Probably . I'd make sure it's dry before giving it a shot but I don't see why it wouldn't if you let it dry for a couple days.I left my charcoal outside. Rain got to it
