The people that you know that lost there shirt...how diversified were there investments? Over how many distinctly different market segments did they invest? Nothing is guaranteed in life, true, but most failure in the market comes from lack of knowledge more than Bernie Madoff's...
Also, How can you reference a movie and a TV show for an clear and accurate view of the ins and outs of the market? I mean really that's just like me saying I know what real doctors do everyday from watching Grey's Anatomy...
People do lose money in the market, especially in the short term. But even for the people in 2008, if they didn't panic, they would have made their most if not ALL of there money back in 4 years. Long term investments have a proven history of providing wealth. And BTW 401k are worthless anyway if you don't pick the funds and stocks yourself. Trust no one.

Well for 1 Boiler room was based on real-life brokers stories not just some magical fantasy...
Sopranos ill give you is satire but they were getting it from ongoing issues.... Like many shows do they take real life events and satire them...
In regards to how diversified people's investments are I am not in their pockets like that.... I am not their broker.... I have done peoples taxes and know people personally and make my conclusions from what I see and hear....
You acknowledged my biggest point that nothing in life is guaranteed and you seem like you know what you are doing but I would not advocate people to jump in and become day traders that seems like it is a very research driven career and if you don't know what you are doing you could run into major problems.
I just want to let you know that historically the stock market has yielded 8% annually which isn't a bad investment but like you pointed out if you are not in it for the long haul you probably won't make much money.... BUT LIKE I SAID NOTHING IS A GUARANTEE and it has been very turbulent in recent years which would scare me.... Personally I would go right now for Muni bonds as they give a decent annual yield and they are triple tax deferred... That's just me though....

I actually like the fact that there is mandatory electronic trading...does it add volatility to the market? Yes, but at the same time it allows people to control there own money and make trading decisions for themselves. 95% of the info you need to make educated trades are available on the internet (5% is the illegal tips that happen on the highest level ie Martha Stewart). The thing I'm just trying to emphasize is that trading is not as hard or as risky as it sounds when you make EDUCATED decisions on your investments. The odds are much more in your favor than gambling at a casino and that is a fact. And even though 401k are good, if you are letting the broker make all of the decisions, your not making a smart decision. And mutual funds are barely better than Savings accounts, you can build huge wealth if you do research, plan, and diversify.

I don't see why people troll JB so much now-a-days.. You ask for another retro with the Nike Air on the back, then JB gives it to you. Now you troll about the crappy quality of the shoes.. Please go somewhere and sit in a corner because JB will not give you the quality of products like the OG's and the first retro's had..Reason is because these products are barely found now and are higher to get than the cheaper quality they are using now. Another reason is because these people who are in the game now don't know how to take care of the sneakers and they just run them into the ground. You aren't going to get another RETRO with the quality of an OG point blank period. If JB was to give another retro the quality of an OG than the price of those sneakers would be higher than what we're paying now and you all would complain about that.
