Any reason why '13 Royals are going for more than '01 Royals?

Hype plays into. A lot of kids will go after the most recent release and pay a lot more for them. The newer shoes are also in better condition... no yellowing etc. It's just like how 2011 concords are worth more than 2001 even though it has Nike Air branding. Kanye also wore then 2013's and not the 2001 and that makes a difference to some lolz

It's pretty expensive. Prices range from $1,000 -$2,200, depends on the base (which they provide) and the materials used.

when people just look at as monetary value from retail. I might as well buy you 8 pairs of Air Force 1's, 4 pairs of roshes, a pair of converse all stars and call it an even trade

This is like in basketball when teams try to trade like 2 all stars and a former role player for an MVP candidate.  Team giving up the one great player always on the losing end of the trade (unless of course, it's the Kevin Love trade that I think Minnesota won).
