Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Season Thread Vol: (17-17)

Wish we Would've gave Ryno a position within the organization a few years ago.
Can't blame him for leaving or feeling slighted by the organization.

:{ @ the Sveum signing......Ryno should've gotten that job.

Emilio Bonifacio 14 hits in first 28 at bats. 4 stolen bases and a 1.120 OPS. Plays CF and 2B, and bats leadoff. Theo signed him just a few weeks ago. :hat

Bonafacio with 3 more hits and another stolen base.

17 for 32 with 5 steals first 7 games.

2 more hits for Bonafacio.

Mike Olt his 2nd homer, followed by Junior Lake goin deep. :hat

Rizzo 3 hits so far tonight as well.

The Cubs bats was pretty hot tonight. 14 hits. we gotta keep this up. Our pitching has be pretty good. The bullpen has to improve though.

K, this is new.

Bonafacio reaches base on an error. Steals 2nd, and the throw gets away, he SCORES on the play, with ease.

UNREAL what this kid is doing for us right now. 2 more steals (7) and he's hitting .500 with the most hits in MLB. :smokin

Blew a 4-0 lead and lose yet another 1 run game to the Pirates. :{

Thing is, the Pirates are supposed to be good, and we're not, but we're hangin in there with them. As everyone grows, in time, they figure out how to win those games.

Starlin with 3 hits today. Lookin better than last year early, hope he keeps it up.

Down 3-0 in game 1 of a doubleheader, lookin like 4-9 looming, we already look like a team that will lose 95+ again, which means, with alllllllllll the young talent we've already built up in the minors, and with the #4 pick, and another pick within the top 40 range this year, we could be looking at yet another top 5 pick next year (and likely early 2nd rounder as well) to add pitching depth to our minor league bats.

2015 we should start to see all these kids come up and play in the majors.
2016 we should start to see results.

I expect Theo to go HEAVY on pitching this draft, and could very well do the same next year, try and land college pitchers who are closer to contributing sooner, rather than waiting for High School arms to develop.

All this, while now having one of the lowest payrolls in the majors, which will allow us to buy players later to fill in whatever holes we have with the youngsters. :hat

This needs to happen, he belongs to this franchise, needs his 21 retired, and let the fans pay him respect he deserves.

CHICAGO -- Former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa was not invited to participate in Wednesday's festivities commemorating the 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field, and a team official says Sosa has some work to do before being welcomed back by the organization.

"There are some things Sammy needs to look at and consider prior to having an engagement with the team," Cubs spokesman Julian Green said.

Sources indicate one thing Sosa has to do is make amends with some former teammates for his actions at the end of his Cubs career.

Sosa hit 293 of his 609 home runs at Wrigley Field in 13 seasons, from 1992 to 2004, and posted three seasons of 60-plus home runs, including the 1998 season when he and Mark McGwire eclipsed Roger Maris' then-record 61-homer season. But he left the team on bad terms after sitting out the final game of the 2004 season and leaving the stadium before the game was over. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles that winter.

A New York Times story reported Sosa was on the 2003 list of players who flunked tests for performance-enhancing drugs.

The Cubs hope to mend fences with him before they celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the team moving into Wrigley, which occurred in 1916.

Sosa, the Cubs' all-time leader in home runs with 545, was a glaring omission on a day when the Cubs welcomed back other former players, including Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ferguson Jenkins, Lee Smith, Bob Dernier, Gary Matthews and Ryan Dempster to celebrate Wrigley's history.

"Sammy Sosa was a Cub that left his indelible print on this franchise, but as it was said by [owner] Tom Ricketts before, he hopes there is a time when Sammy can be back and be with the franchise," Green said.

Commissioner Bud Selig, who was at Wrigley for the celebration, said: "That's a decision that the Cubs have to make. I understand it. Every club handles it uniquely and differently."

Sosa said in January 2013 that he is open to re-connecting with the Cubs and would like to see his No. 21 retired by the team.

"I think that is something that I'm looking for," Sosa said of having his number retired. "That is something I want to happen. I'm kind of surprised it didn't happen before, but time will determine everything. When that happens, I would be more comfortable and more happy. I will be there with all my family."

Up 5-2 in the 9th, and they give up 5 to lose 7-5.

Happy Birthday Wrigley. :{

Theo has done a ton of great things, but finding a closer is not one of them.

I was there. ..it was fun and awesome. ..until the 9th...ughhh

Rondon got 2 saves in this series...blame the manager for bringing him out a 3rd day in a row

Never bring in a closer in a non-save situation. Messes with their head.

Not getting any wins, but we knew we wouldn't, and really, that might be a good thing to stack yet another top pick next year on this core, but Mike Olt with a grand slam tonight, and leading the team in home runs early. (tho hitting an abysmal .178) But he drives in runs, that's a good sign.

Starlin looks MUCH better than last year, and Rizzo looks to have improved as well.

Just need the minor leaguers to work out. Take 2 pitchers in the Top 40 in June, and another possible top 5 pick in 2015.

I know it's hard for everyone to be patient, but it's coming along. Slowly, but surely.

I was looking for this thread...is there a Bears one yet?

It's going to be a LONG *** time before these fools do anything. Last year I watched maybe 3-4 full games. This year I've watched none. Not even the cross town classic. I've watch bits and pieces of them, but they are so boring. Last night was a different story but that's rare.

Cubs up 17-5 on the Cardinals. :hat

Olt with another home run. :eek

Junior Lake 6 RBI

Bonafacio scored 5 times.

Rizzo and Starlin 3 RBI each.
