Official 2017 Knicks Offseason thread, Phil Jackson gone

That front court the Knicks have is REALLY talented. The Knicks are not in that bad of shape, not that I think they will get where they want to be, but if I was the GM I would like what I was inheriting.

They are a leader heavy PG away from being a solid team....

I bring over Ricky Rubio to run the offense. He's a high IQ player that can set up Melo & KP and run the show like a coach on the court. He's extremely efficient and can handle the pressure of playing in NY. I believe he will be available at some point this offseason. My only reservation about Rubio is that he might not be vocal enough to be considered a leader. The Knicks need someone that can take the reigns.

For the shooting guard I bring in a Tony Allen-type player. All defense. Extremely disciplined on offense. These guys are available every year in free agency. Lance Stephenson would be the perfect guy if I felt confident I could keep his head on straight, and Im not confident in that haha.

There are defensive specialists at the SG, SF, PF positions that are available in spades in this league that can fill out the bench.

Potential 2018 Knicks Starting 5:

PG - Rubio

SG - defensive specialist

SF - Melo

PF - KP

C - Willy

Bench:

PG - Rose (I guess ur stuck with him so u might as well keep him)

C - Noah (will be a asset once fully healthy)

C - Plumlee (decent)

I ain't worried about KP

He will be a beast

We just need a true playmaker and a lockdown defender

Phil better not trade KOQ or Willy, ever. Them and KP are our future bigs. These team needs some damn continuity and build chemistry vs getting new players every 2 years. I think we should trade Rose and our pick (top 12 protected) or our '18 pick for Rubio. We need a PG badly and if we don't have a top 12 pick, we're not getting any of the guys we need anyway.

Side note: Hou is killing Phx by 39 and there is still 5 min left in the 3rd. At least we're not THAT bad

Melo is who he's always been. A charismatic & marketable person. And a efficient & pure scorer with size. Everywhere he's been you have GM's and media complaining that Melo isn't a "leader" or carrying the team.

That's not who he is. It's not who he's ever been.

At Syracuse, he had McNamara at PG. That was the LEADER of that team. Melo was the best player. And Warrick was the guy inside doing the dirty work. And they played that zone that allowed everyone to save on energy. Everything people have traditionally been frustrated with Melo about were things other players did for him during his best years. The problem in the NBA is nobody has tried to recreate that same formula for Melo except for when the Nuggets had Chauncey Billlups and Kenyon Martin. Low and behold, that team set franchise records for success. But it was short lived as eventually Billups was moved.

Melo is not a leader. Melo will not carry a team. That doesnt mean he isnt GREAT at what he does well. He needs a STRONG point guard there to carry that emotional load. The same way Kobe needed Derek Fisher. Similar to the way Steph needs Draymond Green. Sometimes in this day and age, your best player isnt your leader. It's just the way it is and rather than try to force something that will never work, I wish GM's & coaches tried to work around the faults.

The Knicks have failed time and time again to get Melo that PG that can carry that burden. I dont blame them for acquiring Noah, he fits the Warrick mold. But Rose aint McNamara or Billups. And they definitely need a better coach.

The only chance Melo had of evolving into the player everyone wished he'd be is if the Piston wouldve drafted him. That squad was filled with leadership & every role was filled. Melo wouldve been a bench player his rookie year, and worked himself into a starting scorers role, and eventually might've learned to lead from some of the best. Over time. But that ship sailed the moment they chose Darko instead.

Y'all realize Porzingis is putting up 18/7 on 45/38/78 in year 2?

Not like he's out here averaging 6 ppg

His numbers may be better, but to me he looked much better last year. Def needs a true PG to make his life 10x easier.

The problem is consistency.

Now injuries didn't help but this is a new starting 5 from last year and even though he was a bum, Caldo was a bummy point guard. Rose is an undersized shooting guard at this point in his career that was playing pg.

KP still managed to do his thing and improve from S1 it just looks bad cuz of the changes and injury.

Honestly, after asw I'd sit him the way Pop does his stars.
