Official 2017-2018 Knicks season thread

How many times can we not get a top 3 pick before all you realize that the lottery isn't rigged?

They're not picking a single envelope out of a hopper anymore. The new ping pong ball format is designed to be far too complex to rig and purposely set up with too many individuals from every single organization involved to do so even if they wanted to, and with the increase of leaked information by the media around the League along with a de-emphasis on market size due to social media, do you really think the NBA would even think to stake it's entire reputation/credibility in order to get the #1 draft pick to NYC when it's already growing exponentially in popularity without the Knicks relevance? The benefits wouldn't even come a single iota close to the cost of taking such a risk. Do yall realize how ******* crazy that is to actually believe?

it definitely is fixed

the cavs getting multiple top picks after lebron left
the pelicans getting anthony davis
the lakers keeping their protected picks like 4 years in a row
philly was probably given the #1 pick in the 2016 draft for getting rid of sam hinkie too

i'd bet the mavs don't get a top-3 pick this year after what cuban did no matter where they're slotted

Of course, why wouldn't an Association of billion dollar organizations stake it's entire credibility and put 10s of billions of dollars at risk to make sure Minneota gets the #1 pick instead of New York in 2015? How foolish of me not to see that now!

Every year people make up different reasons why some lottery was rigged for so and so after the fact because every year you can tie some sort of motivation the NBA might have to rig the lottery for almost any team involved in the lotto.

Philly gets #1 its to get rid of Hinkie, Lakers get #1 its because of LA, Bonston gets #1 its because of Boston, Knicks its because of NY, Bulls because of Chicago, Charlotte because of MJ, Dallas because of Cuban, Miami because of Riley, Cavs because of Lebron, if the Kings got it after David Stern lobbied to keep the Kings in Sacramento and Sactown had just named the street its stadium is on "David J Stern Way"? Forget about it. The theories wouldn't end.

And then if by some random miracle people cant conceive some sort of conspiracy theory after the fact, because some team nobody was saying would get the #1 pick beforehand gets the #1 pick and just like with most teams in the NBA the NBA would have some sort of a vested interest in them getting the #1 pick, then people just forget about it and act like the NBA only rigs lotteries some years when they are able to connect fake dots in a fake puzzle. Like the TWolves winning the lottery in 2015.

The Sixers got #1 in 2016 because they had a million draft picks and the best odds to get the #1 pick for like 5 straight years, they were bound to get it eventually. The Pwlicans got AD because they sucked. The Cavs sucked, they had the Clippers pick who also sucked and actually became the Kyrie pick, and then they got lucky by getting the #1 pick again in the worst draft of recent memory where they selected Anthony Bennett #1. I'm really sure the NBA rigged the lottery to get Anthony Bennett to Cleveland... not exactly Patrick Ewing to NYC or even AD to New Orleans.

And why, tell me, would the NBA hook the Cavs up 3 different times in a 4 year span, including one time when they jumped up from #9 to get the first pick, for losing Lebron (who made the NBA a TON more money by leaving and going to a larger market and increasing viewer interest by becoming a super villain on a star studded powerhouse) after almost a decade of sustained success, when they have yet to hook up its largest media market even once after 2 decades of being a League-wide punching bag, and has had 5 different opportunities in the top 8 since 2005?

They even had a chance to get Lebron or Melo to NYC in 2003 in arguably the most hyped draft class ever but instead opted for Cleveland/Detroit/Denver while leaving NY, Miami, Chicago, LAC, Bulls all just outside the top 4. Doesnt make much sense when you put it like that does it?

The point is, there is always gonna be some sort of reason concocted after the fact to build a conspiracy theory around almost any team winning the lottery any given year. I'm sure the NBA wasn't putting everything at stake to get Shaq and Penny in Orlando consecutive years either but thats how it played out because they got lucky. If the NBA draft lottery was ever rigged, it was only once, and that was in 1985. Because back then media market mattered enough, Ewing was a big enough star/name already in college, the League's popularity was desperately in need of a splash (and wish Magic/Kareem in LA, Bird in Boston, Dr. J/Moses in Philly, and Michael in Chicago, I doubt they wanted to risk Ewing ending up in Sacramento or some ****), and the lottery format was new and simple enough to rig, for a conspiracy theory about rigging the lottery to make a whole lot of sense.

And that's why the "Frozen Envelope" theory has become so noteworthy, but people take that and run with it. That conspiracy theory is already a big enough deal and there has never even been proof of it, proof of the NBA rigging its Draft lotto would be the biggest pro sports scandal since the Black Sox maybe even more so, they arent going to risk that more than once, especially not for stupid *** **** like to incentivize the Sixers to fire their GM or hook the Cavs up for losing Lebron (with Anthony Bennett!) in an age with an increased media presence, a more complicated lottery system, and more at stake. Rigging the lotto was over after 85, if they really did rig it for the biggest college superstar ever to come to NYC in the first lottery ever, and that should have been obvious by the time Cleveland won the rights to Brad Doughetry the following year.

So I really hope yall are joking when you say that the lottery is fixed (and even more so when you think that Silver is finally gonna hook us up after having the shot 4x since 2008 after we fired Isiah and listened to David Stern's advice by hiring Donnie Walsh and STILL moved BACK a spot in the lottery after the Bulls jumped for #9 to #1 - which would make a TON of sense for the same NBA who rewarded the Sixers for firing Hinkie in a rigged lottery format to do), because I refuse to believe that any rational NBA fan actually believes the lottery these days is rigged in any way shape or form... And I LOVE a good conspiracy theory, but this one just makes absolutely 0 sense for soooooo many reasons.

Sorry but the lotto is def rigged. You talking about the same league that went through a scandal for referees deciding games. Not only that, but what your saying loses its merit when you say the NBA could have rigged the draft in 85. You yourself are saying it was rigged. But what makes you think they wouldn't do it today? This is the same league allowing companies to have their logos on jerseys. This is unprecedented in North American sports. Only soccer would do that. The jersey has always been sacred. Now, Nike even dictates what jerseys teams will wear for every game. The NBA will always do what makes them a buck over anything.

Adam Silver wants to legalize sports betting. For what reason? This **** is pure entertainment to them. League is rigged to an extent no question.

Did you read anything that I wrote? There are a ton of factors that went on in 1985 to make it a credible theory that the lottery was rigged. Not saying it for sure happened but there is enough to make the theory credible. Saying its ever been rigged since, or especially that it is rigged today, holds no merit whatsoever.

Even moving past the point I made about how none of the trends make any sense whatsoever from a financial standpoint (ie constantly rigging the Draft for Cleveland and never for NY) for it to make sense for the NBA to put itself at such GINORMOUS risk, but the lottery is so vastly different today than it was in 1985 its impossible to compare.

The 85 lottery featured commish David Stern picking envelopes one by one out of a hopper. Very easy, quiet situation for $tern to rig if he wanted to. At this point getting big time players in major markets was a huge factor, Ewing was a bonafide college superstar and considered the 2nd coming of Bill Russell, and the NBA was just rebuilding itself from the brink of collapse in the late 70s due to less stars/cocaine/ABA.

Nowadays, there hasnt been a Draft as hyped as Ewing since, except 03, when they sent Lebron and Melo to Cleveland and Detorit despite NY, Chicago, Miami, and the Clippers all being lotto teams; media markets dont matter as much; media/social media around the NBA is HUGE and they would be more vulnerable to a leaks; the risk is HUGE with the NBA a multi-billion dollar enterprise that is supposed to have credibility; and of course, the lotto format is completely changed.

Today the NBA selects its top 3 by a ping pong ball picking a random combination in a HUGE hopper, with a thousand other balls bouncing off the hopper in full speed, in front of media members and representatives from all 30 teams. That's a lot of people in on the scam and a lot of people to trust with the fate of the NBA, including members of the media, unless they somehow can manipulate one 3 ping pong ball combination from thousands of balls bouncing away in full speed to come out of the machine without anybody's knowledge.

They then take the randomly selected balls to see what combination of teams come up on a wall full of every single possible top 3 represented by a particular ping pong ball combination based on their lottery odds. Again, with reps from all 30 teams and media members waching closely.

That is not the same as David $tern pulling an envelope out of a hopper in the first year of the lottery. That is a complex format that would be damn near impossible to rig if they wanted to, and they have too much at stake and too much possibilities of a leak with not nearly enough to gain to make them even want to rig it if they could.

Again, it's beyond a stretch to say the NBA Draft lottery is rigged. You are grasping for straws and if you really paid attention to what yopu are saying and/or knew more about the lottery format today, you'd realize that. Not even a 1% chance the lottery is rigged in 2018, and if it was they would have hooked up the Knicks a long time ago instead of having a diabolical plot to ensure Cleveland dominates the NBA dating from the time they gave the Cavs Lebron in 2003 all the way until 2014 when they had the Cavs jump from #9 to #1 so they could trade Wiggins for Love and bring Lebron back. Cmon B.:smh:

How is this even remotely the same? Sports gambling is something that opens up a huge window of possibility for the NBA to make money and its something that many people think should be legal anyway. Obviously a forward thinking savvy GM like Silver will lobby for that to happen. He's also including advertisers more and letting them have a spot on the jerseys. So what?

Again there is a MAJOR difference between lobbying for sports gambling to be legal and letting sponsors advertise on jerseys than plotting to do something that could destroy the entire credibility of the NBA if leaked and cost billions upon billions of dollars for not much more economic gain than they would have if they just let it be random, especially considering that they havent hooked major markets up. That is a preposterous claim.

Mikal is officially my guy 7-9 range right now. I wasn't crazy about him even a month or so ago because I'm naturally hesitant about drafting upperclassmen in the lotto because all the best players their age are already in the NBA, but he looks to be next in line of the prototypical late bloomers.

Gifted raw player with the physical tools to possess a high upside who goes to a great program and is a role player for 2 years before really coming into his own. He still has a lot of room to grow from here, and with his body type and game he has a real chance to become a special 2-way player who fits the direction the NBA is headed in. He's NBA ready, high upside, and he's a gamer. Very high floor but not just a "safe pick" like some other players Knicks fans have targeted in the past over the high upside youngsters. He has a high ceiling as well despite the fact that he'll be 22 at the start of next season.

He has a crazy wingspan and looks to be one of those silky smooth forwards who can hit 3s, create his own shot off the dribble and attack in isolation, and defend multiple positions. Sign me up.
