What to do about the Giants offense? We know they are looking for a replacement catcher to finish out the 2011 season but the real question, even more than who, is how?
My suspicion is that the Giants are going to make a far bigger mid-season trade than anyone expects and when it happens, it’ll probably happen very quickly.
The guy I see on the block at this point, to be perfectly honest, is Jonathan Sanchez. He is an excellent pitcher but he isn’t getting any better and he’s a guy that requires 3 runs of support in order to hit his potential. In addition, Sanchez has no interest in changing his pitching style (high walk rate) to better suit SF’s game.
Of course, this would make Vogelsong a very real gamble and would put Zito back at #5 in the rotation. It would also put pressure on the Giants to develop both Eric Surkamp and Zack Wheeler at a faster pace in case either veteran becomes unusable down the stretch. It’s just the sort of gamble that the Giants front office has made their fortunes on.
Is Sanchez on the Giants Block?
Sure, SF has some utility guys who could be dealt. Super-prospect Brett Pill certainly looks like a very well endowed (albeit superfluous) asset given the situation at 1B but the gem is going to be a pitcher with a year of arbitration on a team with bats and no ace. That’s what will score both big bat and a serviceable catcher in a multi-player trade from either a team in rebuilding mode or on the cusp of being a wildcard contender.
Nobody wants Zito so forget about that option. If the giants are in need, there are teams who will help but they’ll make us bleed for it. With two all-star caliber pitchers coming up in ‘12 and ‘13 - I think we may see everything bumped up a year and Sanchez will be dealt. This would probably put Wheeler on the Squirrels and Surkamp at Fresno in advance of any trade, so that’s a sign I’m looking for as a telltale that the big move is imminent.
Surkamp has the right character
but will he develop fast enough?
At the end of the day, Jonathan Sanchez is a poor fit for the Giants but he’s a 20 game winner on a team that can put up 3+ runs of support. This opens up some very solid trade options for San Francisco as we approach the midpoint of the season.
