The San Francisco Giants selected Joe Panik, a shortstop from St. John's, with the 29th overall pick of the 2011 MLB first-year player draft.
The Giants have had recent success with their first round picks, as Tim Lincecum (2006), Madison Bumgarner (2007), and Buster Posey (200 all contributing to the team's first ever World Series title in San Francisco.
