Giants' Burriss to Make Rehab Start at Shortstop

Emmanuel Burriss will join the Single-A San Jose Giants following San Francisco's weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 6, according to a source close to the team.

Burriss will join the San Jose Giants as a shortstop. He has previously spent the majority of his time in the Giants organization at second base.

Burriss had surgery on a broken toe in his left foot last July. Prior to the injury, he played in 61 games with the Giants, hitting .238 in 202 at-bats.

The Giants have called up outfielder Pat Burrell, a source close to the situation has told Comcast SportsNet. He will join the team in Pittsburgh and could start Friday night against the Pirates.

The source also said that Burrell has been assigned uniform No. 9.

In three games at Triple-A, Burrell is hitting .417 (5-for-12) with one home run and four RBIs.

Initially, manager Bruce Bochy indicated that the former Tampa Bay Ray and Philadelphia Phillies veteran would get 10 games with the Fresno Grizzlies but that timetable has been trimmed.

Brandon Medders cleared outright waivers and will head to Triple A Fresno, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). The Giants had to make room on the 40-man roster for Pat Burrell, who will join the big league club. Medders posted a 7.20 ERA in 14 games this year, with 4.8 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.

A year ago, Medders was a regular contributor out of Bruce Bochy's 'pen, appearing in 61 games and posting a 3.01 ERA. Only closer Brian Wilson appeared in more games than Medders, who finished the 2009 season with a 5-1 record. 

Medders has never started a major league game, but he and his band once opened for country singer Billy Currington, according to the team's media guide. Not only that, Medders, who is an "accomplished singer and guitarist," opened the show right after pitching against the Braves.
