Brandon Roy leaves Blazers game, does not return

If the Portland Trail Blazers and Brandon Roy believe in signs, the universe has not exactly been warm and fuzzy towards them in the past 24 hours. A day after word came out that Roy would never really be the same player due to his cartilage being completely gone in both knees, Roy was forced to leave the game against the Hornets with a knee injury. Blazersedge caught it on tape. Roy immediately jogged to the locker room after sustaining the injury, which is exactly what you want your All-Star locked into a long-term contract to do after he admitted to being in considerable pain.

Word comes from CBS that the Blazers are going to give Roy a few days to see how he feels. Which sounds vaguely like the most sadly hopeful treatment available. They don’t know what else to do, and surgery won’t help, so they’re going to see how it goes.

Yikes.

Look, maybe this ends well. Maybe Roy shakes it off, the knees hold up, he overcomes the pain and he takes them to the playoffs and beyond. It just doesn’t feel like that’s going to be the case. Maybe that’s fitting the narrative, based on their long and expansive history of crushing injuries. Maybe it’s just doomsday prophecy from an outsider that doesn’t understand the heart and will of Portland, Oregon.

But Wesley Matthews better be prepared to earn that check. And Rich Cho better have a few rabbits up his sleeve.

Does anyone know what exactly Roy can do to fix his knees so he can play, long-term?

If i were Portland, tank this season, pray Oden and Roy can be healthy next season, and go on from there. It's a shame if Roy's career ends right here. He's so underrated, with so much potential.

Jazz with another impressive win

...

As far as the Memphis talk... O.J. needs to get out of there. Memphis seems pretty set with their plan & where they're headed & I think Mayo would benifit much more being somewhere else. He's to good of a player to sit back like that. I don't see him as a 1st option on a team, but I do see him as a productive 2nd option.

Memphis moves OJ for picks? For backup 3? A young developing 4 incase they dont keep Zach Randolph?

I expect the Grizzlies to keep O.J. Mayo for the rest of the season. Now when the summer rolls around and Mayo is eligible for an extension is when I think he will get dealt. The team is pretty deep at SG/SF between Rudy Gay, Xavier Henry, Tony Allen and Sam Young. The Grizzlies have a lot of faith in Darrell Arthur as the future PF too, so I'm not sure what they would want to address. Maybe PG? Oh wait...

Okay that's enough Grizzlies talk for the weekend.

Microfracture surgery is pretty much the only option, at this point.

Blazers superstar Brandon Roy has been playing on one leg this season, with tightness in his left knee sometimes rendering it effectively immobile. Roy's athleticism has been noticeably subdued this year, with the guard lacking the explosion in his first step or his careening take-offs. The Blazers feared surgery would be needed to fix the problem.

The actual diagnosis is somehow worse.

The Oregonian's Jason Quick reports that Roy will avoid surgery, but has been diagnosed with "arthritic knee," which will require the guard to take anti-inflammatory medicine daily, will cause pain so long as Roy runs and jumps using his left leg, and means, effectively, that the Roy who swept into the NBA into 2006 is no longer the Roy under Blazer employ. The less-explosive Roy seen this season is the new Roy, and from Quick's telling there appears to be little chance the old one will ever be able to return.

The specific problem is the lack of cartilage in Roy's knee, which causes bone-on-bone friction. That leads to swelling, and that makes the knee less mobile. The medication Roy has begun taking to decrease the swelling and allow more free movement in the joint causes liver problems, Quick reports the Blazers will continuously monitor Roy's liver to ensure permanent damage is not being made.

The other prescription is likely even more painful for Roy: the doctors want him to play less (he's capped at 35 minutes a game right now) and practice less. Roy is by far Portland's best player, and has averaged 37 minutes a game over his career.

Roy's five-year, $82 million contract just took effect this season. FanHouse's Chris Tomasson talked to Roy about his knee and the extension (which is not fully guaranteed) in December.

I feel bad for Roy. Dude will never be the same, and forever in pain.

Sounds like he has the knee of a grandfather.

Anytime you have a superstar player taken down by injuries is sad man. From the grant hill's, the penny's, and now possibly brandon roy. Such a shame, seems like a nice young guy with a great game, and now there are talks about how he will never be that player that he has potential to be. Sucks major. I hope they can somehow correct this situation with him and he can hopefully make a return to his accent(sp?) to that superstar plateu.

As for OJ, I don't think anyone really will know how good (or bad, or average, or really good, etc.) he can be unless he is moved. Those of us who have wathed memphis these past 3 years have seen times when he was the focal point, and how he responded. (Game against denver last year, most of his rookie year, game against clevaland last year, etc.) So from my point of view, we don't know if he will be a budding all star, or more, or less. But imo if he gets moved out of that memphis situation, it might give us a better indictation of who he really can be as a player.

And i'm going to go out on a limb here and say the suns win tonight against the lakeshow and give them back to back losses.
