How would I get started as far as getting a permit to purchase a gun?

I have a question about gun ownership though. To own a handgun and keep it at your house, do you need to take some kind of class to buy and own a gun?
Depends on the state, NYC doesnt allow any citizen to legally own a gun.

there's no way to get around this??

Optics on a shotgun you say...yes exactly it can shoot  12 gauge slugs pretty accurately out to a little past 100 yards and with a holo sight (Eotech, Aimpoint, Trijicon) its good for target acquisition in close quarters especially if you are trying to reduce collateral damage. Nothing beats a shotgun as a short range weapon, the most devastating small arm you can carry for close quarters/ home defense.

The Ammo I picked up was 00 Buckshot, 3" Saboted Slug, and 2 3/4" Foster Style Slugs. The Sabot Slug will go through a car door and keep on going out through the otherside. Can't wait to take her to the next shooting competition. I get to use it in the Kill House for room clearing, I'd rather that than my pistol. Anyway here are the pics.

Great pick up. How does it shoot?

thats a nice pick up elder! if i were to choose a semi shotgun it'd be the 930 spx or the 1100 tactical.

I'm just curious... (question for 206).
Do you collect guns in the same way someone would collect sneakers? I just don't see a point to having like 50 rifles. I suppose without being an enthusiast I wouldn't understand the difference.

I've always enjoyed going to the range to blow off some steam or even target practice. I'm going to start the process on getting my license.

my step dad has this 500... it's a BEAST. I highly suggest to anyone who wants to fire off a few rounds to DO IT. Feels so powerful

He also had a 357 magnum and a revolver (not sure on what it was.. smith wesson or something). I'm still learning.

My accuracy with the revolver was

You can def get a handgun permit in NYC. Will cost you around 1k and 3 days off of work though.

Obtaining a CCP in NYC is a diff story. You either have to be a cop or demonstrate that you're involved in a type of business where you carry a lot of cash on hand.

Thanks 206 and youneedthese. I haven't taken it to the range yet, just picked it up from a gun show for a really good price NIB. Can't go wrong with a Remington, to a slightly lesser degree the same can be said about Mossberg. If I would have seen a Remy 1100 for what I found the SPX for, I would have probably gone in that direction.

I can't speak for 206 and I know that question was aimed towards him, but I don't know too many gun guys that wouldn't want a nice collection like that, just that 3 or 4 factors tend to prevent that...Money, Space for storage, Location (ie NYC, Washington DC), and a Wife. Some poor souls have a combination of those factors

With ammo for the .500 like $1-$2 per round (bullet), you'd have to handload or else have a !$+*-ton of money to drop atthe range.

I've only got a .357, but i'd like to get something that shoots .410 and/ or a ruger blackhawk .44 mag.

And NYC'ers will soon enough be able to own handguns after the Chicago ruling.

Man, this is what I am hoping, I don't live in NYC anymore, but I feel that every responsible, legal, and of good mental faculty should be able to own a firearm...more specifically a handgun IF they choose to do so. I think it's so ******ed that in high crime cities legal citizens are barred from owning firearms for defensive measures while the criminals who don't give two %@*## about most laws run rampant with their "burners". So basically just to protect yourself you have to run the risk of possibly doing a prison sentence. What kind of %+#*!@ up logic is that?

My sentiment exactly. The day DC overturned their laws regarding civilians legally carrying firearms, I read an article in my local paper and there was a story about a lady who was the victim of an attempted break-in. She called the police and THEY told her she should get a gun though it was illegal at the time.  Unbanning the carrying of firearms may in fact reduce crime b/c now the criminals gotta question whether John Q Citizen is carrying as well

click on your state to see what the laws are where you live...
http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/

i just recently applied for my firearms ID in NJ as well as pistol permits
there have been horror stories of this process taking 3+ months before your approved/denied
fortunately i was told it would only take 4-6 weeks...

NJ is one of the stricter states when it comes to gun laws

i've been doing a ton of reading up on forums, websites and watching youtube regarding all things related...
i think i'm sold on getting an fnp-9 for my pistol(sucks that i can only get it with 10 round mags though[nj limit is 15rounds but fn only makes 16 or 10 round mags for this model)...
i'm just a fan on FNH in general...

i've also been looking into getting a shotgun soon after i receive my FID...
either a mossberg 590 or remington 870 is what i'll probably end up with... although FNs semi auto shotgun is O_O but way out my price range ($800+ i think)
plus remington is offering $30 off remington 870 express purchases til the end of the year...
http://www.remington.com/pages/news...s-and-promotions/Fall-2010-RebateRoundup.aspx

as far as assault rifles go that i'll need to do a little more research on because there are certain things you can't have in NJ that i'm not too sure about yet

anyway i'm looking forward to participating in this thread in the near future barring any unforeseen circumstances...

Took a little over 2 months for me to get my firearms purchaser ID card here in NJ.. Love my glock and sig but can't wait til I have enough for a kimber

It's exactly like collecting shoes.  You have guys who have 1000 pairs of sneakers, then there are guys with 100 cars, and there are people who have 100s of guns.  Its all a hobby.  All my purchases were under retail.  I dont go out and just buy them for the heck of it.  I've always liked firearms since I was a kid which has transcended to my "obsession" now.  Every single piece has attracted my attention at one point and if I come across a good deal I jump at it.  I do not intend on selling any my guns and hopefully maybe my future kids will enjoy them as much I as do.  I shoot every single one of them and love introducing the world of shooting sports to those curious.  Always safety first but most importantly have fun!  I just picked up another car so I'm gonna have lay off shooting for a while and work on the new beast.

where you from and where do you shoot?
I've shot a glock 17 and 19 and a sig 229 and 239
all in one session at shore shot
what models do you have?
I plan on owning a glock at some point down the road just because it's so universal
I was considering a used sig to start with but will likely go the fn route
I don't think there are any public ranges within 45 minutes of me so I'll probably end up shooting either at bullet hole or shore shot

Mossberg 930 SPX and the FN SLP semi-auto shotgun comparison.

I prefer the new versions of the semi-auto shotguns over a pump. The new technology semi's are just as reliable, have less recoil than pumps for better follow up shots, and allow for quicker multiple target acquisition. The older styled semi-autos had reliability issues, so I could see why the pump was preferred more back then.
